The Stetson Family: Where Alt-Country Meets Bluegrass – By Christian Lamitschka for Country Music News International Magazine

The Stetson Family is a unique blend of alt-country and bluegrass, captivating audiences with their free-wheeling spirit and soaring harmonies. As described by American Songwriter Magazine, they are “champions of fresh bluegrass but with a bedraggled soul of rock and roots,” taking listeners on a journey down life’s winding highway.

Their 2016 album, “True North,” solidified their international presence, breaking into the US Roots/Americana charts and garnering critical acclaim across the globe. From the UK and Italy to Czechoslovakia and Uruguay, the band’s music has resonated with audiences worldwide.

Recognized for their exceptional talent, the Stetson Family has received numerous accolades, including nominations for Best Duo/Group at both the Victorian and National Country Music Awards in 2016. They have graced the stages of renowned Australian festivals such as Out On the Weekend, National Folk Festival, Cygnet Folk Festival, Nannup, Bangalow BBQ & Bluegrass, and Gympie Muster. Their international recognition extended to an invitation to perform at the International Bluegrass Music Association conference in Nashville, Tennessee, further solidifying their global impact.

The Stetson Family has cultivated a strong and loyal following through consistent touring and engaging performances. They are a familiar sight on the Melbourne music scene, the national festival circuit, and countless other venues. Their popular festival harmony workshops are a highlight, inspiring participants and often culminating in a collaborative performance alongside the band onstage.

The band’s journey began in the mid-80s when lead singer/songwriter Nadine Budge, John Bartholomeusz, and Colin Swan formed a synth-pop band, supporting the likes of The Eurythmics, The Monkees, and John Farnham. However, their musical trajectory took a significant turn when they swapped their synthesizers (and mullets!) for acoustic instruments. In 2008, they joined forces with John’s childhood friend Andy Carswell (My Friend the Chocolate Cake) and Luke Richardson, forming the core of The Stetson Family.

Their debut albums, “Hey Sister Mary, Where’d You Get That Gun” (2009) and “The Devil in His Sunday Best” (2011), garnered critical acclaim. “The Devil in His Sunday Best” was even hailed as a “landmark Australian roots album” by Rhythms Magazine. The band’s recognition continued with nominations at the Victorian and National Country Music Awards for Best Group and Best Bluegrass Song. Their music has also been featured on ABC Felicity Urquhart’s “Favourites of 2012” album and in the SBS TV documentary, “Last Chance Saloon.”

With their unique blend of alt-country and bluegrass, coupled with their infectious energy and captivating harmonies, The Stetson Family continues to captivate audiences worldwide. Their journey, from synth-pop beginnings to becoming a celebrated force in the Australian and international music scene, is a testament to their enduring talent and unwavering passion for their craft.
