Tori Martin’s “Abilene”: A Cinematic Journey Through Time and Heartbreak
By Christian Lamitschka for Country Music News International Magazine
Tori Martin’s “Abilene” is not just a song; it’s a captivating narrative brought to life through a stunning short film. With her current single soaring to #6 on the Texas Regional Radio Report, Martin has gifted her fans with a visually rich music video that transcends the typical music clip, becoming a moving story in its own right. The video, expertly co-directed by Jason Engelman and Director of Photography Justin Frech for LuckySky Music, transforms the haunting beauty of Abilene, Texas, into a backdrop for a tale of love, loss, and timeless connection.
Filmed entirely in the “storybook capital of America” during an unexpected February cold snap, the “Abilene” video is a masterclass in visual storytelling. The production team meticulously crafted a narrative that weaves together two distinct timelines: the 21st century and the 1940s. This dual-timeline approach is achieved through carefully curated costumes and authentic locations, creating a seamless and immersive experience for the viewer.
The video’s locations are integral to its emotional impact. The charming Cedar Crest Cottage serves as a central hub, housing both the contemporary characters (Theresa Rowley, Ricco Fajardo) and the 1940s couple (Cheyenne Haynes, Blake Blair). The iconic Larry’s Better Burger Drive In adds a touch of nostalgic Americana, while the historic Paramount Theatre and Texas & Pacific Railroad Depot provide poignant settings for moments of intense emotional resonance. Throughout these scenes, Martin’s powerful performance, captured against the stark beauty of a deserted highway in high winds, anchors the narrative with her raw emotional delivery.
The story behind “Abilene” is as compelling as the video itself. It began when Martin stumbled upon a collection of love letters hidden in a rental house. These letters, filled with the sweetness of love, the heartbreak of war, and the profound sense of belonging to a place, deeply resonated with Martin. Inspired by their timeless emotions, she set out to tell their story through her music.
In 2022, Martin collaborated with hitmakers Bill DiLuigi, Kirsti Manna, and producer Bill Warner to write “Abilene.” The song’s genesis was born from a simple observation during a radio tour. “I was on a radio tour, and I remember saying to them, ‘I can’t stay in Abilene because the wind makes me crazy,’ and from there the ideas started flowing,” Martin recalls. This initial spark ignited a creative process that has propelled “Abilene” to surpass the success of her previous #1 TRRR single, “Lost In The Country.”
Martin’s connection with Texas radio is undeniable. “Texas radio in particular has been really good to me,” she acknowledges. Her nomination for “New Female Vocalist of the Year” at the TRRR Awards, where she also performed, further cements her rising status in the Texas country scene.
During February’s Country Radio Seminar in Nashville, Martin capitalized on numerous press and TV opportunities, expanding her reach and connecting with a wider audience. Media outlets such as The Pulse of Entertainment, Prime Time Podcast, Breakin’ Indies Country Countdown on Kickin’ Kountry 101, Terry Hudson’s rBeatz Radio, Nashville Insider, Dance Time in Texas, Coda Country, Country Evolution, and Nikki In Nashville highlighted her talent and artistry.
Currently, Martin is focused on songwriting and recording for her upcoming album, promising more heartfelt and authentic music for her growing fanbase.
