Album Review: Johnny 99 – Mr. Lonely

A Honky-Tonk Heart Worn on the Sleeve

Johnny 99, the alt-country alter ego of City and Colour guitarist John Sponarski, finally delivers his long-anticipated full-length album, Mr. Lonely, via North Country Collective. Over the past year, the singles released from this project have teased a rare and distinctive talent, and the full ten-track offering confirms it: this is authentic, pure honky-tonk music crafted for the here and now. Paying direct homage to heroes like Gram Parsons, Emmylou Harris, John Prine, and Willie Nelson, Johnny 99 isn’t just carrying a torch—he’s setting a new fire in the modern country landscape.

The album is born from a unique period of collaboration, serving as a “time capsule” for the magical year Sponarski spent living with producer and multi-instrumentalist Matt Kelly. This shared creative space permeates the record, resulting in a sound that feels both vintage and perfectly realized. Backed by his City and Colour bandmates (Kelly, bassist Erik Nielsen, and drummer Leon Power), the musicianship possesses a natural, lived-in groove, enhanced beautifully by Georgia Harmer’s backing vocals and Kendel Carson’s emotive fiddle work. Mr. Lonely successfully navigates the complex emotional terrain of heartbreak and recovery, maintaining a light-hearted, tongue-in-cheek fun that makes even the saddest songs feel like they were “made to dance to.”

Track-by-Track Breakdown

01. Never Stay Down The album kicks off with a spirited declaration of resilience. One of the early singles, this track immediately establishes the vintage country aesthetic—crisp drumming, classic guitar tones, and a driving rhythm that insists on optimism, even when faced with setbacks. It’s the perfect opener, setting the stage for an album that embraces both sorrow and levity.

02. Just Like You Another standout single, “Just Like You” showcases Johnny 99’s signature ability to find relatability in deeply personal narratives. The song’s lyrics feel penned “straight from a heart worn on his sleeve,” resonating with anyone who has navigated the messy reality of relationships. It’s a compelling example of his commitment to storytelling within a traditional country framework.

03. One More Memory Slowing the pace slightly, this track delves into the reflective side of the album’s theme. Amidst the hard conversations and moving on from past relationships that inspired the record, “One More Memory” likely captures the bittersweet moment of choosing what to keep and what to let go, delivered with a gentle sincerity.

04. Mr. Lonely The title track serves as the album’s emotional core. True to the classic country sound, it explores the central theme of loneliness not with self-pity, but with a clear-eyed perspective. Expect soaring fiddle lines and robust backing from the band, proving that even a song about being lonely can fill the room with sound.

05. I Wanna Go With My Boots On This single is pure, unadulterated honky-tonk fun. It’s the track that most explicitly leans into the “tongue-in-cheek” mandate, carrying the reckless, celebratory energy of a late-night anthem. It’s a powerful showcase of Johnny 99’s talent for writing songs that are immediately enjoyable and perfectly suited for the dance floor.

06. Two Step To Forget In line with the promise that this is music “made to dance to,” this track provides the mandatory two-step rhythm. The lyrics probably mask a deeper ache—the classic country trope of using a physical motion to distract from emotional turmoil. It’s a highlight for its sheer playability and skillful blend of melancholy and movement.

07. You’re Not Even There This track focuses on the emotional distance in a strained relationship, or the realization that a chapter has definitively closed. It’s likely a more introspective piece, allowing Sponarski’s distinctive vocal delivery to shine as he grapples with the ghost of a past connection.

08. Getting Over You A key single that helped define the album’s sound, “Getting Over You” is a masterclass in the breakup song. It avoids cliché, instead offering a modern take on the process of healing. This is where Sponarski’s ability to anchor his alt-country vision in the here and now truly comes into focus.

09. Lay Down The Hammer The final single released before the album drop, “Lay Down The Hammer” suggests a theme of decisive action or completion—whether it’s finishing a hard day’s work or putting an end to emotional indecision. It’s a driving track that demonstrates the band’s tightness and vintage country feel, concluding the run of pre-album tracks with powerful energy.

10. Hold Me Close Mr. Lonely closes on a hopeful, tender note. “Hold Me Close” represents the “finding love again” aspect of the album’s creation. It provides a warm, intimate conclusion, suggesting that while the year was filled with reflection and hard goodbyes, it ultimately led to a wonderful new chapter.

Verdict

Mr. Lonely is the definitive statement Johnny 99 has been dreaming of for years. It’s a perfect convergence of classic country sincerity and modern rock pedigree, a testament to Sponarski’s maturation as a singular voice in the genre. For fans of roots music who appreciate both lyrical depth and an irresistible beat, this album is a must-listen. It’s authentic honky-tonk in its purest form, and few artists in Canada are doing it better right now.
