Elvie Shane’s “My Boy”

Elvie Shane knows just how much
dedication and hard work (and patience!) it takes to see one of your
songs eventually begin to climb the charts. The Billboard Country
Airplay chart for October 16 shows Elvie’s “My Boy” jumping in
at No. 56. The song also tops Billboard’s “Most Added” chart
that lists the songs added to the playlists of Country Radio stations
nationwide. For six weeks straight, Elvie has performed roughly five
full-band shows per day—miraculously maintaining his stamina,
gaining believers and setting the bar high for future newcomers.

It was October of 1959. By now the Dean
Show had been off the air for more than a year, and I was camping in
the mountains of my home state of Pennsylvania on the ten acres of
raw Mountain land that I had purchased with my mustering out pay from
the army. My dog ‘Lem’ was with me. He was part Lab, he was still a
puppy, he was fun and he was great company. To make sure that my
little friend would be warm I had given him my fur lined parka for
his bed. And just before I crawled into my warm and woolen sleeping
bag for the night I wrapped him up in it.

Lamitschka: What hopes and desires do
you have?

Answer: Aside my prayers for world
peace and global understanding, my ‘self’ wishes are for my books to
be read and my music to be heard all across the world.

Lamitschka: What has been the biggest
disappointment in your life?

Answer: As old as I am I have more than
one answer to that question;

Careerwise I could start with this one;
Way back in 1962 my DICK FLOOD musical career was growing by leaps
and bounds. “Another Stretch of Track“ was my third release on
Epic Records and it had jumped to #20 in the charts. I was really on
my way. My next single release was to be a beautiful country style
arrangement to my song “I’ll See You To The Door“, and I believe
that it had every chance in the world of going all the way to #1. The
country music fans across the nation and all the DJs were primed and
ready for that next release. The seeds to my success had been
planted.

Lamitschka: What drives you?

Answer: In order to help me exlain what
motivates or drives me let me take us back to 1960 and the Annual
Disc Jockey Convention in Nashville, Tennessee. At the RCA Victor
luncheon that year the then very famous comedy team known as Homer
and Jethro were called up to sing their latest RCA Victor recording.
I have never forgotten the first words spoken. I believe it was
Jethro who said, and I quote,“We are Homer and Jethro, the Everly
Brothers of the Stone Age.“

Lamitschka: Do you have any interesting
stories about how fans have been affected by your music?

Answer: In 1989 -1990 as ‘Okefenokee
Joe’ I hosted and narrated three hour length documentries for Georgia
Public Televison. One of which entiled simply “Swampwise“ won an
Emmy award. It was aired five or six times a year at prime time on
Saturday nights for the next ten years. And almost everywhere I went
someone would recognize me as Okefenokee Joe. Sometimes a fan would
buy my dinner, or just want to shake my hand, or procure my
autograph, have their picture taken with me, tell me how much they
enjoyed or learned from my GPTV documentaries, tell me how much I
have influenced their life, or show me a song or poem that they had
written. The list goes on and on. And my alter ego by the name of
“Okefenokee Joe“ very apparently became a folk hero and just very
temporararily a household word throughout the state of Georgia.
