William Lee Golden Golden Memories

Through the Golden Lens: A Lifetime of Travel Captured in “Golden Memories”

By Christian Lamitschka for Country Music News International Magazine

For over six decades, William Lee Golden has been the visual and vocal anchor of American country and gospel music. With his flowing white beard and baritone resonance, he is an indelible fixture of the Country Music Hall of Fame, the Gospel Music Hall of Fame, and the Grand Ole Opry. But while fans are intimately familiar with his voice as a member of The Oak Ridge Boys, his latest project, Golden Memories, asks us to see the world through his eyes—literally.

Released today, this stunning picture book is more than just a coffee table decoration; it is a visual diary of a life lived on the move, capturing the quiet moments between the roar of the crowds.

The Legend Behind the Lens

Before diving into the pages, it’s worth noting the man holding the camera. As a member of The Oak Ridge Boys, William Lee Golden has helped shape the sound of American music with hits like “Elvira” and “Thank God For Kids.” He has navigated the highs and lows of the industry with a grace that has made him a beloved figure across generations.

In recent years, Golden has expanded his creative footprint, often performing with his family band, William Lee Golden and The Goldens, proving that his artistic thirst remains unquenchable. Golden Memories represents the latest evolution of that spirit—a transition from the auditory to the visual.

A Review of “Golden Memories”

Spanning nearly two decades of digital photography (starting in 2008), the collection is a testament to the “road life” that most fans only glimpse from the outside. The book is organized as a sprawling travelogue, moving from the rugged, rust-colored vistas of Red Rock Canyon and the Grand Canyon to the serene, shimmering sunsets of Old Hickory Lake near his home in Nashville.

What makes this collection particularly poignant is the contrast between the vastness of the world and the intimacy of the shot. Golden doesn’t just capture landmarks; he captures the feeling of being there. Whether he’s documenting the historic streets of London and Paris or a quiet stretch of American highway, there is an underlying sense of gratitude in every frame.

Key Highlights of the Collection:

  • The Nashville Connection: The photos of Old Hickory Lake offer a rare, peaceful look at the landscape that grounds the artist when he isn’t on a tour bus.

  • Global Perspectives: His international shots provide a “behind-the-scenes” perspective on what a world tour looks like when the stage lights go down.

  • The Digital Shift: Since adopting digital photography in 2008, Golden has clearly mastered the art of timing, using light and shadow to tell stories that lyrics sometimes can’t reach.

Golden himself puts it best:

“I began taking photos on each journey as a way to remember the places I’ve been and the roads that led me there.”

Collaborating with Scot England, Golden has curated a selection that feels less like a celebrity vanity project and more like a heartfelt gift to the fans who have walked those roads alongside him.
