In a move that celebrates the intersection of American landscape and its musical soul, American Prairie has announced that Country Music Hall of Famer Vince Gill will be the recipient of the 2026 Ken Burns American Heritage Prize. The Grammy-winning legend is set to be formally honored on May 6, 2026.
The prize, named after the nation’s most esteemed visual historian, recognizes individuals whose life’s work has advanced our collective understanding of the American spirit. Gill joins an elite roster of past honorees, including architect Maya Lin, musician Wynton Marsalis, and historian David McCullough.
A Career Defined by Authenticity and Excellence
Vince Gill’s journey in music is a masterclass in longevity and humility. 2025 marked the 50th anniversary of Gill leaving home to pursue his musical dreams—a milestone he celebrated by signing a lifetime contract with MCA and launching the ambitious 50 Years From Home series, releasing a new EP every month for a year.
His accolades are among the most extensive in music history:
-
22 Grammy Awards® and 18 CMA Awards.
-
30 Million Albums Sold across 21 studio releases.
-
2025 CMA Willie Nelson Lifetime Achievement Award recipient.
-
Member of the Eagles since 2017, following a legendary tenure in bands like Pure Prairie League and The Time Jumpers.
Beyond the trophies, Gill is revered as a “musician’s musician.” Whether through his soaring tenor voice or his world-class guitar playing, he has become a unifying figure across bluegrass, rock, gospel, and country genres.
“The Enduring Power of American Music”
The prize’s namesake, Ken Burns, noted that Gill’s work mirrors the very landscape American Prairie strives to protect.
“Like the prairie itself, his songs are shaped by patience, humility, and a deep respect for the people,” Burns stated. “Vince has given us a truer understanding of our shared American heritage.”
Gill, a longtime friend and collaborator of Burns, expressed deep gratitude for the recognition. “The work American Prairie is doing to preserve America’s Great Plains is invaluable,” Gill said. “I’m grateful to be able to contribute to their efforts in any way I can.”
The Mission of American Prairie
The 2026 award comes during a landmark year for American Prairie, which is celebrating 25 years as a donor-funded organization. Based in Montana, the group works to conserve the Northern Great Plains—one of the world’s most endangered biomes.
Why Grasslands Matter
-
Vanishing Ecosystems: Less than 2% of temperate grasslands worldwide are permanently conserved.
-
The Strategy: American Prairie purchases private land to connect fragmented public lands, creating vast wildlife corridors.
-
The Vision: Creating a fully functioning ecosystem that offers the public permanent access to the landscape that shaped the American character.
