Tucker Wetmore The Meteoric Rise

Tucker Wetmore: The Meteoric Rise of Country’s Newest Star, Crowned with a CMA Nomination

By Christian Lamitschka for Country Music News International Magazine

In an industry where success is often a marathon, Tucker Wetmore’s career trajectory feels more like a 100-meter dash. Just a year and a half into his recording journey, the Washington native has achieved a remarkable milestone: a nomination for New Artist of the Year at the 2025 CMA Awards. This inaugural CMA nod underscores the unprecedented speed and scale of his rise, solidifying his position as the defining breakout star of contemporary country music.

The 59th Annual CMA Awards, Country Music’s Biggest Night, will air live from Nashville’s Bridgestone Arena on Wednesday, November 19, at 7 p.m. CT, and stream the following day on Hulu. For Wetmore, this nomination is not just an acknowledgment of his talent, but a validation of a powerful, connection-driven music that has quickly captivated a global audience.

A Record-Shattering Debut: The Numbers Behind the Momentum

Wetmore’s impact is undeniable, measured by staggering metrics that few newcomers ever reach. His debut album, What Not To (Back Blocks Music/MCA/Mercury Records), released in April, made history as the biggest country album debut from a new artist in 2025. The 19-track collection, which showcases his unique blend of heartfelt country storytelling with modern melodies and pop sensibilities, debuted at an impressive No. 15 on Billboard’s all-genre 200 Albums chart.

This success has propelled Wetmore to over 1.2 BILLION total global streams in just over a year—a colossal figure that speaks to his massive, engaged fanbase. The album’s commercial power is built upon a foundation of breakthrough singles that have already achieved significant certification:

  • “Wind Up Missin’ You”: His first No. 1 at Country radio, already certified RIAA 2x Platinum.
  • “Wine Into Whiskey”: The breakout track that first introduced him to a wide audience, achieving RIAA Platinum status.
  • “3,2,1”: His current single, which is continuing the chart momentum by climbing strongly inside the Top 20.

The Artist: From Gridiron to Guitar

Wetmore’s journey to the Nashville spotlight is a compelling story rooted in the rural Pacific Northwest. Born on November 5, 1999, he grew up in the small town of Kalama, Washington. An early self-taught musician, he began playing piano at age 11, inspired by legends like Jerry Lee Lewis. However, sports initially dominated his path, leading him to play college football at Montana Technological University.

The crucial turning point came when a career-ending injury forced him to abandon his dreams of professional football. Returning home, he found his therapy and new purpose in music, channeling his experiences into original songs. This blend of authentic country grit and a contemporary sound quickly resonated, leading him to move to Nashville in 2020. His music is often characterized by his powerful baritone vocals, singalong hooks, and a lyrical openness, which he describes as “a little bit of love, a little bit of God, and a little bit of alcohol.” His debut album, in particular, has been lauded for its vulnerability, with the title track “What Not To” being his most emotionally honest song yet, delving into his upbringing and his parents’ divorce.

A Year of Triumphs: Career Firsts in 2025

The CMA nomination is the crowning achievement in a year already packed with career milestones for Wetmore.

  • Brand Partnership: In July, the ACM New Male Artist of the Year nominee became the first-ever celebrity face of Wrangler’s All-Terrain Gear collection, starring in the brand’s new outdoor campaign, Unplugged.
  • Cross-Genre Collaboration: Demonstrating his genre fluidity, he teamed up with rapper BigXthaPlug on the track “About You” for the rapper’s recent album, I Hope You’re Happy.
  • Industry Recognition: He performed and presented at the 2025 ACM Honors, showcasing his growing status among country music’s elite.
  • Global Touring: On the road, Wetmore has played to hundreds of thousands of fans across the U.S., U.K., and Europe in 2025. He successfully sold out his first headlining shows and spent the summer joining superstar Thomas Rhett on the Better In Boots Tour, before announcing plans to return this fall with another round of highly anticipated headline shows.

In an era of instant gratification and digital virality, Tucker Wetmore has seamlessly translated online buzz into real-world, commercial success. With his CMA New Artist of the Year nomination, the young artist is not just knocking on the door of country stardom—he’s kicking it wide open.
