TRADITION BULLETIN

Do
you remember the Roys?  They pretty much stay in the limelight of
activity and attention.  They performed for us several times at the Oak
Tree in Anita, parking their big black bus in front of the theater,
making many people in Anita ponder who they could be.  It’s a brother
and sister, Lee and Elaine Roy, who put the group together.  They have
just been named “Top Bluegrass Artist” at the 10th annual International
Acoustic Music Awards.  This is pretty high- roller participation in
acoustic music from an organization that promotes excellence in acoustic
music performance and artistry of acoustic artists in various genres.
The Kramer Sisters will be at LeMars this year,
specializing in Czech music and old time music in general.  We are
certainly looking forward to having them with us.
WIDR-FM is a student-run, non-commercial radio station at
Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo.  The station airs a wide
variety of music unlike many other stations, in that it provides it’s
listeners with music like folk music, old-time music, early country
music, bluegrass music, mountain music, etc., any musical art form that
has created a unique and distinctly American culture.  As they say,
“forged in the mills, reaped from the fields, and dug from the hills of
this great land we Americans share an unparalleled musical legacy.”  The
program is called the Heritage Hour Folk Show which reveals the past
while looking towards the future of American culture, and airs on
Saturday 1pm-3pm.  They also do on-air phone interviews as well as live
in the studio interviews and performances.  If you fall into the
category as listed above, send a CD to Justin Gish, PD, WIDR-FM, 1501
Faunce Student Svcs., Kalamazoo, Mi 49008
Imagine this…. wood salvaged from the original home of
the Grand Ole Opry, the Ryman Auditorium, will be made into guitars by
the Glen Morgan Guitar Co.  There will only be 55 guitars made from the
wood of this historic building.  You’re going to pay big bucks though if
you buy one at $12,000.00 a whack, or twang, or strum, whatever you
call it.  Here’s the good news.  It includes shipping and handling.  If
you are interested give Robbie Wittkowski a jingle at v_wittkowski@bellsouth.net
Most astonishing thing came up regarding SpringFest that
takes place at the Oak Tree in Anita on April 11-12-13.  It’s going to
be a grand three days (four shows) weekend, the usual fund raiser to fix
the roof.  We discovered, in a round about way, that the folks who
bought the Anita Grand Motel, her name being Sandra Bullock, yes Sandra
Bullock, is a cousin to the one and only Doris Day.  We also discovered
that Ms. Day is not only still alive (at the age of 90) she still
manages the hotel she owns in Carmel, Calif., called Carmel-By-The-Sea
Resort.  Well who knows, maybe she would like to come visit cousin
Bullock, and why not on April 11-12-13?
Oklahoma native Vince Gill was honored with the 2014
Country Radio Broadcasters Career Achievement Award.  Emmy Lou Harris
and Rodney Crowell doing the honors entertainment wise.  This award is
presented to an individual artist, or act, that through their
creativity, vision, performance, or leadership has made a significant
contribution to the development and promotion of country music and
country radio.  With more than 17 studio albums recorded and more than
26-millin sold, Vince Gill has had an incredible career, as a singer,
songwriter, producer, and multi-instrumentalist.  He has 20 Grammys and
18 CMA Awards.  He also performed at the Ryman Auditorium along with
several other country acts during the big gathering of the radio
broadcasters.
It’s not enough that Billy Ray Cyrus’s daughter Miley makes
vulgarity an art form, he has re-mixed “Achy Breaky Heart” creating a
version of the song that those who hated it in the first place,
especially trying to label it ‘country’ in 1991, find it even more
repulsive today.  The thing with today’s so-called country artists is
not the performing or the presenting of real country music, it’s a
contest to see who can make the most people angry with their vulgar
trash.  Step right in Satan, and enjoy Billy Ray Cyrus at his best.  No
wonder Disney dumped daughter Miley.  The duo’s porno would not quite
make it next to Mickey and Minnie.
Peggy Seeger led the tributes to her half-brother Pete
Seeger at the BBC-Radio 2 Folk Awards at the Royal Albert Hall in
London, Wednesday February 19.  4,500 in attendance made anti
folk-singer Blake??? concerts look a little small. Loaded with celebrity
folk artists, the awards show also celebrated its 15th anniversary
year.
Got a bit of news that Tim Atwood, the keyboard player for
the Grand Ole Opry for 40 years, and Hoot Hester, a great fiddler for
the same organization, have been fired from the Opry.  Apparently his
was done entirely on the phone.  You know, ring ring, hello you’re
fired. click
Did you stay up to see Sarah Davison on the Craig Ferguson
show.  That particular show is on really late here in California, but we
stayed up for it anyway.  Craig Ferguson is the show that follows Dave
Letterman on CBS national television.  Anyway, Sarah was playing
keyboard for her friend Krystal Keith, whose song “Down Into Muddy
Water” is doing really well on the national charts.  Sarah’s ‘organ’
sounds from her keyboard were great. The song is a great ‘dance tune’ as
Dick Clark may have contributed, and the singing, especially the
harmony parts were really really good.  Good going Sarah, we enjoyed it
very much.  If you can find Sarah on Face-Book you can also see a video
of the taping there as well.
Willie Nelson has confirmed he will be holding his 4th of
July picnic at the Fort Worth Stockyards this year.  The
restaurant-bar-dancehall is called “North Forty in Texas” and I suspect
it’s probably a pretty large place.  Willie started this way back in
1973, and he’s still doing it.  Tickets start at $40 and go up to $250
depending on where you sit.
Randall and Dwayne George are selling their Ozark Mountain
Hoe-Down theater in Eureka Springs, Arkansas, to Larry Reitz, who
already owns the next door Cinnamon Valley Resort.  The Georges are
expected to sign a recording contract with Way Out West Records, and
Carl Acuff, Jr., becomes the new star at the Hoe-Down.
The Academy of Country Music will pay tribute to members of
the Armed Forces with an annual television special featuring Merle
Haggard, George Strait, and Carrie Underwood, a 2-hour special that will
air May 20 on CBS.
