I initially came to Los Angeles to
make films. I managed to get into a number of movies as an actor studying the
craft, Basic Instincts, Original Batman Movie, played the attorney in the Ray
Charles Super Bowl Diet-Pepsi commercial, things like that; but I took those
roles to study the craft of filmmaking, and to study what it is like for the
actor in front of the camera. I wanted to learn how to direct actors.
I was living in Pasadena, and working
for a hotel chain there, and later for them in Santa Monica, and spending a lot
of time in Hollywood. I was studying at the Stella Adler Academy on Hollywood
Blvd., while booking the talent, among my many chores for the chain; which
inadvertently led to my awareness that I could sing. I had done so for years as
a kid, and saw people making a living doing so, and knew I could too.
Many of the exercises we were doing at
the Academy was great training for my singer-songwriter career. Both in fact!
We did exercises to conquer “stage fright,” create a detailed character in 5
minutes, and there were times we would have to go out onto the Boulevard to
describe everything, every detail of that 5 minutes on stage. It was
instrumental for the songwriter in me as well. I am a story teller as a
songwriter.
Hollywood was amazing to me, a girl
from Cleveland. It is the land of dreams, enchantment, and opportunity! New
York is about Broadway, Nashville is Music City and
Hollywood is the Land of Dreams. To be in the midst of all that old history and
be there in the center of it myself, was something I just had to write about. I
like to think the song “Hollywood,” that songwriter Irene
Tuomainen and myself wrote, captures some of that.
I wrote the song “Hollywood” in 2005 with
Irene, along with the ever popular title cut “Hearts of Time,” and “Blue
Collar Man” all three on the Hearts of Time album. It was my second full album release after
Possibilities in 2003.
“Hollywood”saw
a considerable amount of radio play back in 2005-2006, across the country,
radio like WYVY in Union City, Tennessee and to KCYN in Moab, Utah; from WCJW
in Warsaw, N.Y. to KBCY in Abiline, Texas. Lots of great secondary country
radio markets; also on internet sites likeCountry Girls only Winston-Salem NChttp://listen.to/CountryGirlsOnlyto Real Countryhttp://tomcountry.fc2web.com, Japan. It got considerable play
and attention down under in Austarlia and New Zealand as well. It had a
presence iHeart Radio and was distributed through Apple Music, Deezer and Play
Music, back in 2005-2006.

Hollywood
I’m
walking down Hollywood Blvd
The
streets are covered with famous stars
They’ve
all been there
And
here we are
Where
it all began
And
suddenly I’m Gone with the Wind
I’m
floating on air with Fred and Gin
I’m
cruising with Marilyn in a limousine
Shining
like a girl’s best friend
Hollywood
Shine
your light on me
Roll
out the carpet
Cause
I’m back upon the screen
Hollywood
Where
my life is a dream
You
make me laugh
You
make me cry
You
take me places I never been
There’s
Rat Packs and Rebels Without a Cause
And
make believe in the Land of Oz
I’m
walking with hands full of fairy dust
Holding
on to now and then
Oh
holding on
Hollywood
Shine
your light on me
Roll
out the carpet
Cause
I’m back upon the screen
Hollywood
Where
my life is a dream
You
make me laugh
You
make me cry
You
take me places I never been
Hollywood
Shine
your light on me
Roll
out the carpet
Cause
I’m back upon the screen
Hollywood
Where
my life is a dream
You
make me laugh
You
make me cry
You
take me dreamin’
Hollywood
Oh
shine your light on me
Hollywood
Where
my life is a dream
Oh
Hollywood…

I have played almost all the Hollywood clubs
and theaters from the House of Blues to the Whisky A Go-Go, from The Hard Rock
Café to BB Kings. I host Oscar parties every year, and I am still in awe of the
power of film to effect the way people see things in the world. Living in
Hollywood is like being a kid in a candy store, so the song lyric I wrote
describes my joy in being a part of it all.
