Cozy Carols and Country Roots: The Promised Deliver a Modern Holiday Classic with “Snow Day”
By Christian Lamitschka for Country Music News International Magazine
The festive season has found its newest soundtrack with “Snow Day,” the modern Christmas carol from the acclaimed roots/country trio, The Promised. Known for their vibrant acoustic style, tight harmonies, and powerful storytelling, the band has crafted a timely and charming addition to the holiday music canon—a feat that follows their high-profile exposure on the hit TV show, Virgin River.
The Undeniable Chemistry of The Promised
At the heart of The Promised is the creative and marital partnership of Jesse and Noelle Burch. The pair’s story began in 2018, sparked by a mutual respect for music while performing in their respective bands, quickly leading to a writing session and, soon after, marriage. In 2019, they formalized their musical bond by creating The Promised, completing the dynamic lineup with the incredibly talented upright slap bass player, Casey Shalala. Their chemistry, both on and off stage, is undeniable and a vital ingredient in their captivating sound.
The trio’s inaugural year was nothing short of meteoric. They were accepted into the 2019 Breakthrough Country music project Top 12 and ultimately claimed the 1st Place Grand Prize winners title. Working with MyTone Records, their initial releases found quick traction, with both their first and second singles, “We Could Be in Love” and “Don’t Take Me Down,” being licensed to the second season of the American TV show Virgin River. The band was even filmed performing both songs on the show, cementing their profile with a broad audience. Their rapid success continued with a collaboration with Country Rebel, the world’s largest Country music network, for a series of live videos of their original music, including their latest video, “I Ride,” which garnered over 270,000 views in its first week. They capped their inaugural year by performing on the Sunfest mainstage as an acoustic trio, playing just prior to headliner Jason Aldean, and earned three BCCMA Award nominations.
A Modern Take on a Timeless Tradition
With “Snow Day,” The Promised takes their signature roots/country sound and applies it to the timeless theme of a Christmas carol. The song is described as a “Modern Christmas Carol,” suggesting a lyrical and sonic sensibility that is contemporary while retaining the warmth and narrative core of holiday classics. Given the band’s penchant for acoustic style and powerful storytelling, “Snow Day” likely uses the simple, cozy imagery of winter to weave a heartfelt tale of connection and reflection.
The trio’s signature elements—the interplay between Jesse and Noelle’s vocals, the tight harmonies that capture the listener, and the compelling rhythm provided by Casey Shalala’s upright slap bass—are undoubtedly brought to bear on this track. This blend ensures that the song, while being a holiday number, retains the high energy and powerful sound that The Promised is known for.
By delivering a holiday track, The Promised demonstrates the versatility of their roots/country style, proving that their music, which captures you within its story, is perfectly suited for all seasons. “Snow Day” offers fans a comforting and engaging piece of music, reaffirming The Promised as a dynamic group whose genuine connection and talent continue to propel them to new heights.
