“Gone for Good”: The Last Revel’s Roaring Return

By Christian Lamitschka for Country Music News International Magazine

There’s a raw, unvarnished beauty to The Last Revel’s music, a quality that shines through in their upcoming album, Gone for Good. This isn’t just another collection of songs; it’s a testament to perseverance, a sonic diary of life on the road, and a deeply felt exploration of what it means to chase a dream when the world feels uncertain. For a band that briefly stepped back from the grind in 2019, Gone for Good, set for release on July 18, 2025, feels less like a comeback and more like a definitive statement of purpose.

At the heart of their new single, “Go On,” lies an origin story as unique as the song itself. Ryan Acker, one of the band’s principal songwriters, found the initial spark during a solo mule deer hunting trip in the Absaroka Mountains. The image of a “twilight fighter” – a buck with a broken antler, presumably from a territorial battle – resonated deeply with Acker, morphing into a metaphor for human relationships driven to their breaking point by love, greed, anger, or pride. This unexpected inspiration blossomed into a track that, as Acker notes, he and bandmate Lee Henke steered towards the narrative of a failed relationship.

Musically, “Go On” is a whirlwind. It’s a “fast-grass” romp that captures the chaotic energy of that mule deer encounter, yet simultaneously delivers a jubilant, almost cathartic sense of relief. The sheer breakneck speed at which they tore through it in the studio is palpable, reflecting the lyrical sentiment of moving on, of yelling “With or without you, go on.” It’s a short, sharp shock of a song, leaving you breathless and wanting more, a perfect showcase of the band’s lauded live energy. As Whiskey Riff accurately put it, “The Last Revel’s fast-grass new single, ‘Go On,’ is a must-hear.”

Gone for Good itself is a ten-track journey, produced by Dave Simonett of Trampled by Turtles – a collaboration that clearly elevates the band’s already compelling sound. Ryan Acker, Lee Henke, and Vinnie Donatelle, along with bassist Ryan Krauss, have crafted an album that feels deeply personal yet universally relatable. This isn’t a cautious return; it’s a full-throttle commitment, a “no going back” moment for the Minneapolis-based Americana/indie-folk outfit. Their dedication is etched into every note, every harmony, a reflection of their Midwestern roots and the hard-won wisdom gleaned from years of pursuing music full-time.

The album’s tracklist promises a diverse yet cohesive listening experience, from the driving energy of “Solid Gone” to the reflective tones of “Porcelain.” It’s an album that seems poised to resonate with anyone who’s ever wrestled with ambition, faced down uncertainty, or simply found solace in the raw honesty of a well-crafted song.
