The Castellows, comprised of Ellie (lead guitar), Powell (banjo), and Lily (vocals), emerge as a beacon of traditional country revival with their EP A Little Goes a Long Way. Hailing from Georgia, this sister trio eschews mainstream pop country tropes, opting instead for authentic songwriting and instrumental prowess, all while carving their path with an autonomous imprint and publishing deal.

Their latest offering, *A Little Goes a Long Way*, serves as a precursor to a forthcoming LP, echoing the impactful brevity of contemporaries like Wyatt Flores. The EP delves into themes of darkness and beauty, juxtaposing natural imagery with deep-rooted lyrical narratives that resonate with the essence of classic country. Tracks like “I Know It’ll Never End” evoke echoes of The Carter Family, showcasing the trio’s profound connection to country’s historical fabric.

Highlighting their versatility, the sisters’ rendition of “Hurricane” (originally by Leon Everette) adds a haunting layer to the collection, drawing from a rich tradition recently revitalized by acts like Band of Heathens and Shane Smith and the Saints. This track, along with originals such as “The Part Where You Break My Heart,” underscores The Castellows’ ability to blend traditional melodies with modern lyrical sensibilities, enhanced by contributions from Rhett Akins.

Produced by Trina Shoemaker, known for her work with iconic women of country, the EP maintains a raw acoustic feel, though some listeners may yearn for more instrumental breaks to complement its rootsy vibe. Nonetheless, standout moments like Ellie’s composition “Heartline Hill” shine brightly, enriched by a dynamic banjo backdrop and poignant guitar solos.

At its core, A Little Goes a Long Way resonates with the elemental harmonies of three sisters united in their dedication to authentic country music. As they navigate their evolving sound, The Castellows emerge as a promising force, bridging the gap between tradition and innovation with palpable talent and promise.
