CD Review: Steve Kolander – While The Pedal Steel Cries

I have reviewed several of Steve Kolander’s recent releases in this column and for good reasons. Steve makes sure I have his material to review and provides me with background info and I happen to think he is a great singer/songwriter. I followed Steve’s Career in the 90’s when he was one of the hottest acts in Nashville. Having shared the stage with many of his contemporaries at the time who are considered legends in the business now. Jim Lauderdale, Dwight Yoakam, Ken Mellons and many others.

One of the reason Steve was so familiar on the scene is one of the same reasons he never aired well as an artist. Steve Kolander is a unique songwriter and with a distinctive voice.
While being a great live act Steve’s music never translated to chart success and he never quite got the recognition he deserved.

Steve left the business for a while but as any musician will tell you you cannot “quit” music. He continued to write great songs, even recording several that have found their way to the light of day in recent months. During the pandemic with some time on his hands Steve began a rebirth of sorts as a songwriter. His YouTube channels’s BBQ Sessions have been drawing a lot of interest as Steve performs many of the new songs he has been writing and playing requests for long time fans who want to hear him do his classic tunes.

Steve’s newest release is a result of one of those BBQ Sessions called  “When the Pedal Steel Cries” A haunting song reminiscent of the days of the western singers when country music was still called Country & Western. Steve looked to some of his heroes for inspiration here Marty Robbins, Sons of the Pioneers and others that created that classic western sound.
A song with thematic lyrics and imagery and a great story When the Pedal Steel Cries improves with every listen.
