Broken Hill native and renowned artist Stephen Rowe is making a highly anticipated return to his musical roots with the release of an original Christmas song, “It’s That Time of Year,” available today, Friday, December 5th, 2025, through Red Rebel Music/MGM Distribution. This single marks Rowe’s first new music in years, promising a heartfelt sound to ring in the holiday season.

A Song Five Years in the Making

“It’s That Time of Year” is more than just a seasonal tune; it’s a deeply personal piece that has been on Rowe’s mind for half a decade. “I’ve had this Christmas song in the works for around five years and always wanted to record it,” Rowe explains. “It’s a song about love, happy times and family.” For Rowe, the track is a nostalgic journey back to his childhood, infused with the warmth and security he sought. “I was always looking for happiness as a kid and for me, this is a happy song that makes me feel like I’m back home in Broken Hill,” he says, connecting the music directly to his hometown roots.

Collaboration and Production

The track, which was written by Rowe, features a significant collaboration in its production. “It’s That Time of Year” was co-produced by Campbell Laird, a respected figure in Australian music. Laird, who also plays drums on the track, was a member of the Aussie band MEO 245, which was signed to Mushroom Records in the early 80’s. Rowe expresses immense gratitude for the partnership: “Campbell plays drums on the track and is the co-producer with me. He’s a great musician and I’m very grateful for his experience.”

A Look Back at Rowe’s Musical Career

Rowe is no stranger to the charts, having previously released two well-received albums: “Broken Hill” (2007) and “Restless Soul” (2009). His discography includes a string of memorable hit singles such as:

  • “Broken Hill”

  • “Two Clocks”

  • “Working Class Miner’s Son”

  • “Don’t Kick My Dog”

  • “Country Kids in The City”

  • “Restless Soul”

Most notably, Rowe scored a massive hit with the duet “Let’s Fall in Love Again” with Tania Kernaghan. This smash single spent an incredible 46 weeks on the Music Network Country Top 20 Airplay Chart, solidifying his place in the Australian country music scene. Rowe also featured on Kernaghan’s single, “Yee Ha!” back in 2005.

Returning to the Studio

Despite maintaining a presence by continuing to play live, Rowe has primarily focused on his other successful creative pursuit in recent years—his thriving art career. His paintings are now highly sought after, hanging in galleries, corporate offices, and private homes globally.

However, the itch to create new music proved too strong to ignore. The release of “It’s That Time of Year” is just the beginning of a renewed focus on his musical output. Rowe is clearly energized by this return, stating, “I am excited to be back recording new songs again after all these years and looking forward to recording and releasing more music in 2026.”

The new single, Stephen Rowe – “It’s That Time of Year”, is a joyful, family-focused song that brings the listener a dose of genuine Christmas happiness, just in time for the holiday season.
