Seth Walker Finds Peace in the Present with “Why The Worry”
By Christian Lamitschka for Country Music News International Magazine
For Seth Walker, the creation of his 12th album, “Why The Worry,” wasn’t just a musical endeavor; it became a personal reckoning. In the midst of recording, a moment of clarity washed over him, a gentle reminder that artistic creation, however consuming, is but a fleeting point in time. “This work does not define me,” he realized. “This is not who I am forever. This is just a moment.” This profound understanding became a guiding principle, shaping an album that breathes with the acceptance of impermanence and the quiet strength found in letting go.
“Why The Worry” is an invitation to shed the anxieties that cling to perception, over-preparation, and the incessant noise of the world. Walker found inspiration in the timeless wisdom of Willie Nelson: “I’ve never seen worry accomplish anything, so I decided not to do it.” It’s an ethos that permeates the album, a sonic balm against the relentless pressures of modern life.
The album sees Walker reconnecting with familiar collaborators, creating a comfortable and supportive creative environment. Jano Rix returns to the producer’s chair, sharing duties with Walker and engineer Brook Sutton. The insightful pen of Oliver Wood (The Wood Brothers) graces the title track, while Ed Jurdi (Band Of Heathens) lends his lyrical touch to “Midway Girl.” A deeply personal touch comes from Walker’s classically trained father, Scott Walker, who adds delicate string arrangements.
However, the core of “Why The Worry” lies in the intuitive interplay between Walker and his longtime trio: Rhees Williams on guitar and piano, and Mark Raudabaugh on drums. The three musicians embraced a fluid approach, entering the studio without rigid agendas, trusting the album’s central mantra to guide their sonic journey. This willingness to surrender to the creative process imbues the album with a natural, unforced quality.
Life, however, has a way of testing even the most resolute intentions to let go of worry. Just as the album neared completion, Hurricane Helene struck Walker’s home nestled in the mountains outside of Asheville. As the storm raged and infrastructure crumbled, the significance of the nearly finished record wavered in Walker’s mind. Yet, the album’s core message resurfaced: worry wouldn’t mend the damage, but the solace of song still held its purpose. “Why The Worry” ultimately emerges as a spiritual reset, akin to witnessing the tranquil beauty of a sunrise after a long, dark night. It offers a sense of warmth and comfort, a gentle easing of tension.
Alongside five compelling Walker originals, the 11-track collection features a thoughtfully curated selection of covers that span musical landscapes. Two gems from the legendary J.J. Cale set a tone of laid-back grace, perfectly aligning with the album’s themes of ease and unhurried movement. Walker opens the record with a smoky, soulful rendition of Bill Withers’ “The Same Love That Made Me Laugh,” setting a mood of gentle funk. Al Green’s “Take Me To The River” is reimagined with a distinctly relaxed feel, while Michael Kiwanuka’s gospel-tinged plea, “I’m Getting Ready,” resonates with redemptive power. The album finds its poignant close with Bobby Charles’ seminal “I Must Be In a Good Place Now,” a fitting nod to the journey of finding inner peace.
“Why The Worry” arrives on the heels of significant achievements for Walker. He co-wrote “Moon & Stars,” the captivating title track of The Mavericks’ latest album, a duet featuring the enchanting vocals of Sierra Ferrell. He also shared stages across North America with esteemed artists such as The Mavericks, Marc Broussard, Raul Malo, and Steep Canyon Rangers, further solidifying his reputation as a compelling live performer.
For those seeking an evening of soulful melodies and introspective lyrics, Seth Walker’s live performances offer a genuine and captivating experience.
