Gumbo, Grit, and a One-Eyed Dog: Scott Southworth Serves Up a Swampy Masterpiece with “Farmer Dude”

By Christian Lamitschka for Country Music News International Magazine

If you’ve ever wondered what happens when a seasoned Nashville songwriter spends too much time in the Gulf drinking bushwackers and eating gumbo, the answer is dropping on February 27.

Scott Southworth, the award-winning storyteller known for his honky-tonk soul and “twisted” lyrical wit, is trading the high-lonesome sound for something a bit more… swampy. His latest single, “Farmer Dude,” arriving via Flaming Tortuga Records (FTR), is a masterclass in character-driven songwriting that proves Southworth is still one of the most unpredictable pens in Music City.

The Vibe: From Bluegrass to the Big Easy

Originally conceived as a traditional Bluegrass track, “Farmer Dude” underwent a sonic metamorphosis after Southworth took a trip down to the Gulf Coast. Influenced by the soulful, syncopated rhythms of Little Feat and the legendary Dr. John, Southworth brought a New Orleans “juke joint” energy back to Nashville’s Hilltop Studios.

Working with producer Buddy Hyatt, the band leaned so hard into the groove that they decided to keep the original scratch vocal. The result? An authentic, raw performance that captures the spontaneous joy of the tracking session.

“This song puts me in some juke joint in Louisiana eating fried Alligator Tail and drinking some ice-cold beers in a bucket!” says Terrence Pine, President of Flaming Tortuga Records. “It showcases Scott’s twisted songwriting style… I mean, c’mon, how often are the words ‘Plantar Fasciitis’ used in any type of music?”

The Story: A “Kernel of Truth” Named Vinnie

At its heart, “Farmer Dude” is a free-wheeling tale about an eccentric farmer, his high-stakes “special crop,” and the four-legged security system guarding it all. While the farmer is a work of fiction, the star of the song—a one-eyed dog named Vinnie—is 100% real.

Southworth explains that the inspiration struck while hiking with his own dog on local trails:

  • The Encounter: A local man and his mean, one-eyed dog, Vinnie.

  • The Detail: Vinnie wasn’t on a leash, but a frayed piece of rope, constantly lunging and growling at passersby.

  • The Fiction: While the dog’s temperament is historically accurate, Scott spun a wild narrative around the owner’s “eccentric” agricultural pursuits.

About the Artist: Scott Southworth

Scott Southworth isn’t just a songwriter; he’s a staple of the international country music scene. Originally from the Pacific Northwest, Southworth has built a formidable career in Nashville and across the pond:

  • Award-Winning Pedigree: 2024 Josie Award winner for “Song of the Year, Traditional Male” and a 5-time AWA nominee.

  • International Reach: A three-time Top 30 charting artist in Europe, headlining festivals from France to New Zealand.

  • Songwriting Powerhouse: With over 100 independent cuts to his name, he was named Country Music People Magazine’s “Indie Songwriter of the Year” in 2018.

  • Media Personality: Fans recognize him as the creator and host of “Guerrilla Country” on Country Road TV and the former co-host of “The Music Row Show.”

His previous albums, including The Last Honky Tonk In Town (ranked #13 in the “Top 25 Albums of the Decade” by Country Music People Magazine), have cemented his reputation as a torchbearer for authentic, independent country music.

The Verdict

“Farmer Dude” is exactly what country music needs more of: personality. It’s fun, it’s slightly dangerous, and it’s musically sophisticated without taking itself too seriously. Whether you’re listening for the NOLA-inspired piano riffs or the hilarious lyrical nods to foot ailments, this track is a guaranteed earworm.
