Scott Shipley Interview Part 2 by Christian Lamitschka for Country Music News International Magazine & Radio Show
Lamitschka: What is your favorite song among all the songs you have recorded and what’s the story behind it?
Answer: It’d be hard to narrow that down to just one song. I’ve lived every single one of them either directly or vicariously. Songs are like medicine to the writer and the listener.
Lamitschka: How much creative control do you have over your music?
Answer: I’m notoriously stubborn ha ha. I’m learning to sometimes let others take the reins as I get older but I ain’t afraid to get there with the crew and work all day before the show either.
Lamitschka: There’s a lot of work that goes into a number one hit. What did it take to make it in your case?
Answer: Man that’d be amazing! Someday maybe we’ll have one, my main goal is to always stay true to the music and to be the same on and off stage.
Lamitschka: Do you have any interesting stories about how fans have been affected by your music?
Answer: When someone tells me one of my songs touched them that’s everything to me. If you can help someone get through something they’re going through by sharing your experiences with them, what more could you possibly want out of life.
Lamitschka: Who inspires you musically and how deep do your musical roots run?
Answer: I am a student of JR Cash, everything about that man musically and spiritually inspires me every day. I love Poe’s writing and imagery, and Leadbelly’s voice and heavy right hand. Bill Monroe redefined Hillbilly music. Roger Miller was a POET.My parents affect everything I do. They got me started and although they both passed away several years ago, they still guide my steps.
Lamitschka: What do you think about today’s music scene versus its past and where do you see it going in the future?
Answer: Change is not something to fear, it’s necessary. We should always remember our past but also be willing to grow. Trees have roots but unless they grow branches they’ll die.
Lamitschka: What do you think about today’s music industry?
Answer: I think there’s a place for everyone. Everyone has something to say and deserves the chance to do so. As long as we always honor the song and remember it’s the fans that keep us going.
Lamitschka: If you had the chance to change something about the music industry, what would it be?
Answer: I’d tell folks to quit trying to be artists and focus on being entertainers first.
Lamitschka: As an artist, you do many tasks such as recording, touring, interviews. What do you like best, what’s your favorite activity?
Answer: Making music. Every bit of it.
Lamitschka: Are you doing anything to take music beyond its current borders or are you happy where it is?
