Poi Rogers – Twilight Blues

Twilight Blues is the debut album from a very talented duo, Poi Rogers from Santa Cruz, CA.
I have heard them perform for years as members of the Carolyn Sills Combo so I was anxiously awaiting the release of this CD.
I was not disappointed.
From the opening notes of Don’t Steal My Covers to the last crescendo of Montana Moon, the album plays very evenly and smooth. A good balance of original music and original arrangements of some very interesting covers, showcase a very talented duo on the verge of something extremely special.
The writing is witty and clever, the singing is solid and Gerard Egan is a talented multi- instrumentalist.
I have always had a soft spot in my heart for fun music, so naturally I am drawn to “I Can’t Get a Long Little Doggie” and “Don’t Steal the Covers” but I think my favorite song in the whole set is “Tuesday in Las Cruces.” Carolyn’s voice shines especially bright here and I love the Spanish flavored guitar licks.
Poi Rogers comes with a built in pedigree. Multi-award winners with the Carolyn Sills Combo, Inducted into the Sacramento Western Swing Hall of Fame and possessing a thorough knowledge and love of the many styles of music reflected in this eight track collection, they set a standard for others to strive for.
Debut albums generally show promise and sophomore projects usually weed out the one hit wonders. In my estimation we can only expect more great things from Poi Rogers!
