ON THE ROAD WITH IOWAN’S BOB & SHEILA EVERHART

LaFeria, Texas…..”We’re in the Texas Rio Grande Valley,” says Bobbie Lhea Everhart, the 15 year old daughter of Smithsonian recording artists, Bob & Sheila Everhart.  “I’ve been very busy with my studies, and now I’m learning French.  Dad got me the Rosetta Stone method, and I kind of like it, it’s even fun.  We’ve been eating out a lot, and not so much ‘budget’ either.  Mom and dad have been performing, and they don’t like to eat before they play, so we’ve had some nice dinners after their gigs.  I liked the one at the Texas Longhorn Bar-B-Que. It wasn’t all that expensive either, you could order one choice of meat (brisket, chicken, ribs, sausage, etc) and then you also get some potato salad, coleslaw, and the best pinto beans I’ve ever eaten, and it only cost $8.50.  So even though it wasn’t quite a budget lunch, for the amount of food, and the wonderful taste, it sure was a nice dinner here in Texas.”
“We’ve done a couple of gigs,” Sheila added, “one in San Benito and one in Mission.  How they do this at the various RV parks is they charge a fee at the door which they then give to the entertainers.  So far they’ve only charged $5 to see the show, but when we have 100 or more, we do really well.  There’s been a ton of Iowan’s at our first gigs, and it’s so nice to see folks that either come to the Oak Tree Opry or the LeMars Festival.   Everybody is enjoying the nice weather, but it’s been a bit rainy and cloudy.  Bob had a wild dream the other night, he dreamt that he had the four ‘Queens’ of country music at LeMars. Kitty Wells, Loretta Lynn, Reba McEntire, and Dolly Parton.  They were all four on stage at the same time.  Don’t we wish that could happen, what a ‘boost’ to country music that would be, all those wonderful performers coming back to the ‘country.’
“The music business never ceases to amaze me,” Bob added, “we’ve been invited to participate in a number of projects here in the valley, one being the FAME (Families Advocating Moral Entertainment) awards.  They want me to do some MC work and maybe make a presentation or two.  The other interesting thing is the fact that this year is Woody Guthrie’s 100th birthday.  We’re going to do a radio interview about it, and it looks like we may be on the “A” list to appear on the last Guthrie celebration at the Kennedy Center in Washington DC later this year.  We’ll also be doing a ‘special’ Guthrie show at the Oak Tree.  All of this at the same time Bobbie Lhea is learning French, we may also have an opportunity to go to Paris in mid-October, right around her 16th birthday, so that all sounds like a lot of fun, I hope we’re up to all of it.”
“We’ve had Francis Hahn opening our shows,” Sheila added, “and he does a super job.  He does it with the flag he brought back from Viet Nam, the ‘last’ American flag to fly over that country.  His program is super, and we hope to have him do it at least once during the summer at the Oak Tree.”
