ON THE ROAD WITH BOB & SHEILA JUNE 12. 2012

ON THE ROAD WITH BOB & SHEILA
Anita, Iowa….”On the road again, just can’t wait to
get on the road again…..”  Sheila Everhart is the bass player for the
dynamic duo ‘Bob & Sheila’ who doesn’t sing, but often time, she can
be heard singing the Willie Nelson hit as she steers the bus down the
road.  “It’s true,” Sheila piped up, “I don’t sing, but I play the
upright acoustic bass and do a clog dance whenever the elder tells me.
(That would be Bob) We had two great shows over the weekend, the first
one at the little opera house in Blairsburg, Iowa.  This is not a large
opera house, seats about 150, and the acoustics are pretty incredible
there. We set up the PA system, but after we got it up, we considered
taking it back down because the sound is so neat in this building. We
used it anyway, hoping we might get to go back and try a concert without
it.  Bob is on this 100th birthday of Woody Guthrie kick, so that’s
what he started out with, but he harkened back to our early days when he
would talk about the stories of where some of the most famous songs
came from.  We used to do this at Silver Dollar City in Branson a lot,
but not so much anymore, especially when we are playing with lots of
other performers.  Anyway, that’s what he did at the Blairsburg Opera
House, and sure enough, a gentleman came up to him after the show and
told Bob how much he enjoyed the ‘lecture.’ Bob just grinned and then
shook his head.  Well whatever.”
“We had a nice crowd at the Blairsburg show,” Bob
added, “but the Fort Dodge show on Sunday night didn’t do as well. Still
had a nice audience, but the theater was pretty large, seats right at
400.  Shadric Smith opened the show with some of his brilliant original
songs, and then we went on for about an hour and fifteen minutes.
Attendance was not so good, and according to the Webster County Museum
curator, who arranged the show, “There was lots of other things going on
in Fort Dodge this weekend, not the least of them being a “Hillbilly
Daze” kind of thing that went over into Sunday.  They also made everyone
go around to a back door to get into the theater because of
construction, so it didn’t work out very well.  It was super great
however,  to see Dale & Caroline Eichor and Bobby and Joy Awe in the
audience.”
“We’ve got another chance to rectify our self,” Sheila
added, “It’s Bob’s birthday June 16, (no, he’s not 100 yet) and we’ll
do a show at the Phoenix Theater in Neola at 7pm.  He doesn’t want any
gifts or stuff like that, he’d just as soon folks come and just spend
the evening with us, and lots of other great players who want to be part
of the little birthday get together.  Harriette Andersen and Kathy
Graeve have promised to have a nice piece of birthday cake with each
ticket purchased, so it should be kind of fun, like old days when folks
just gathered together to enjoy some good old friendship and old-time
music.”
“We actually had a pretty good budget lunch this
week,” Bobbie Lhea, the Everhart’s daughter added, “there’s a place in
Fort Dodge called Tom’s Hamburgers, and they had a broasted chicken
dinner for $6, so we did super good.  Thanks dad.”
“Our next big show at the Oak Tree Opry in Anita,” Bob
added, “is Red Johnson, the Capitol recording artist who made a hit of
‘There’s A Grand Ole Opry Show Playing Somewhere.’  He’s on June 15th,
7pm.  712-762-4363 for tickets.
