Wandering Into the Light: The Relentless Rise of Max McNown
By Christian Lamitschka for Country Music News International Magazine
In the modern landscape of country music, where the distance between a bedroom recording and a stadium stage can be bridged in a single viral moment, few artists have traversed that path with as much grace and authenticity as Max McNown. From the misty forests of Bend, Oregon, to the neon-soaked streets of Nashville, McNown’s journey is a testament to the power of raw storytelling and a voice that feels as weathered and honest as an old leather jacket.
The Roots of an Oregon Soul
Born Max Winter McNown on July 20, 2001, in West Linn, Oregon, and raised in the rugged beauty of Bend, Max’s connection to music was forged long before he ever stepped foot in a recording studio. Growing up in a household where singing was as natural as conversation, his childhood was soundtracked by his father’s acoustic guitar and his mother’s encouragement.
The Pacific Northwest serves as more than just a backdrop for his life; it is the foundation of his sound. You can hear the damp earth and towering pines of Oregon in his lyrics—a “Pacific Northwest brand” he established early on. “If you don’t have a foundation,” McNown has noted, “whatever you build might not be the truest version of yourself.” This commitment to truth would become his North Star as he navigated the early days of his career.
A Leap of Faith and the San Clemente Pier
In August 2022, seeking a new direction and inspired by the bravery of his brother’s fight against cancer, Max packed his bags and drove to Southern California. With nothing but his dad’s old guitar and a handful of songs, he began busking on the San Clemente pier. It was here, amidst the crashing waves and the passing tourists, that Max honed his “warm vocal presence” and learned to capture the attention of strangers.
His early digital breakthrough came from an unlikely source: Omegle. By playing covers and original songs for random strangers and posting their reactions to TikTok, Max built a legion of supporters. This grassroots fame eventually led to interest from major TV talent shows, but Max, ever the individualist, famously turned them down. He knew he needed to walk his own path, one that wasn’t dictated by the constraints of a competition format.
The Breakout: “A Lot More Free”
Success wasn’t just a digital fluke; it was backed by undeniable talent. His breakout single, “A Lot More Free,” became an anthem for those seeking peace after upheaval. The track reached #1 on TikTok’s Breakthrough USA chart, peaked at #1 on the iTunes singles chart, and earned him a spot on Billboard’s Emerging Artists chart.
The song, which eventually went RIAA Platinum, showcased his “soulful rasp” and a gift for writing lyrics that sound like they were pulled directly from an intimate conversation. It set the stage for his highly anticipated debut full-length album.
Wandering and Beyond: A Modern Troubadour
On April 12, 2024, Max released his debut album, Wandering, under Fugitive Recordings. The record is a masterclass in indie-folk and country, featuring standout tracks like “Turned Into Missing You,” “Love Me Back,” and “Worry ‘Bout My Wandering.” Critics quickly drew comparisons to songwriting heavyweights like Tyler Childers and Zach Bryan, noting Max’s ability to “soundtrack our most intimate moments.”
Following the success of Wandering, Max didn’t slow down. He followed up with the Willfully Blind EP and his sophomore album, Night Diving, in 2025. This era saw him expand his sonic palette with the deluxe version, Night Diving (The Cost of Growing Up), featuring the hit “Better Me for You (Brown Eyes)” and collaborations with artists like Hailey Whitters on “Roses and Wolves.”
His ascent reached new heights in early 2025 when Kelly Clarkson covered “A Lot More Free” on her show, subsequently inviting Max to perform live. This national exposure solidified his place as a mainstream contender without sacrificing his indie sensibilities.
A Legacy in the Making
Today, Max McNown is a mainstay on the touring circuit, headlining sold-out shows from the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville to festivals across Europe and Australia. Despite the fame, he remains grounded by his family and his faith. He often speaks of his grandfather, a pastor whose wisdom has shaped him into the “old soul” his fans adore.
In October 2025, Max married Sallie Kate Goff, who has become a recurring muse in his music videos for songs like “Strong as Iron” and “Forever Ain’t Long Enough.”
As Max moves forward, his mission remains simple: to return the healing that music once gave him back to his listeners. “There’s so much more to life than awards and numbers,” he says. “I just want to light people’s paths.” With his forest-green eyes set firmly on the horizon, Max McNown isn’t just wandering anymore—he’s leading the way for a new generation of country music.
