From Small-Town Talent to Viral Sensation: The Rise of Malachi Gagnon
By Christian Lamitschka for Country Music News International Magazine
Malachi Gagnon is an American singer and songwriter known for his folk-pop and country-influenced music. Originally from a small town in New Hampshire, Gagnon’s musical journey began during the COVID-19 pandemic when he was just 12 years old. He taught himself to play guitar using YouTube videos and discovered his talent for singing during an impromptu family talent show. His father, recognizing his son’s gift, bought him a Taylor guitar and encouraged him to share his music online.
Gagnon quickly gained a following on social media platforms like TikTok by posting covers and original songs. His authentic, relatable lyrics, often inspired by his hometown and personal experiences with hope and heartbreak, resonated with a wide audience. At 15, he released his third single, “Without You,” which, along with his previous singles “Psychopath” and “Craving Me,” amassed over 800,000 streams on Spotify. By the time he was 17, he had over 5 million streams on the platform.
Gagnon’s music is often described as a blend of country storytelling with pop and folk sensibilities. He cites artists like Zach Bryan, Noah Kahan, and The Lumineers as major influences. He has collaborated with notable Nashville songwriters, including David Ray Stevens, who has written for major country artists like Lainey Wilson and Jelly Roll. Beyond his music, Gagnon is also an advocate for mental health awareness, a cause he became passionate about after the loss of a friend. He balances his music career with his studies and other hobbies like golf, and he continues to release new singles and explore his evolving sound.
