Maddye Trew’s “Single Of The Year”: A Reluctant Anthem for the Unattached
By Christian Lamitschka for Country Music News International Magazine
Country music’s newest face, Maddye Trew, is setting out to collect awards in her career, but her latest release, “Single Of The Year,” has her begrudgingly accepting one for her relationship status. Slated for release to radio and digital streaming platforms on May 23, this track offers a refreshing departure from the “I can buy my own flowers” independence often heard in country music. Instead, Trew openly laments her singledom, highlighting her somewhat reluctant ascent up the imaginary romance charts.
Trew explains the personal connection to the song, stating, “I was drawn to this song because it’s the perfect song for me right now. When we hit our twenties, many of our friends are getting married (I’ve been a bridesmaid five times). But, those of us working on our careers, or those who haven’t met the right person yet, often feel left behind. This song is a PARTY ANTHEM for all the bridesmaids and groomsmen who haven’t got a PLUS ONE.” Her candor speaks to a widespread sentiment among young adults navigating their twenties, offering a relatable and spirited take on being single in a world of growing partnerships.
The creation of “Single Of The Year” involved an impressive lineup of talent. The track was produced by the GRAMMY award-winning Steve Marcantonio, whose extensive credits include work with music legends like Taylor Swift, John Lennon, and Keith Urban. The song also features the support of notable musicians: Ford Thurston (known for his work with Randy Houser and Chris Cagle) on guitar and resonator guitar; 2002 ACM Musician of the Year nominee Jeff McMahon (who has played with Tim McGraw and Chris Cagle) on keys; drummer Kip Allen (Keith Urban, Phil Vassar, Devin Dawson); and Ben Murray (Chris Cagle) also on drums. This formidable team has crafted a sound that perfectly complements Trew’s honest and engaging vocal performance.
“Single Of The Year,” penned by Lauren Spring, John Frank, and Brad McKinney, has already garnered recognition, securing 4th Place in this year’s NSAI Song Contest Presented by CMT. Armed with a degree in Commercial Music from Belmont University and a genuine “country-as-cornbread” charm, Trew’s ambitions extend beyond her own success. She’s committed to sharing her journey with others, splitting her time between her burgeoning career and championing fellow artists. She co-hosts Kickin’ Kountry 101’s weekly Breakin’ Indies Country Countdown, syndicated on iHeart digital, and is also involved with the McMahon on Keys podcast, actively advocating for her chosen musical family.
Trew’s talent has already led to significant milestones in her young career. At just 17, she earned a “golden ticket” on American Idol, marking her first appearance on a national broadcast stage. Since moving to Nashville, she has been a featured guest on the nationally syndicated Jimmy Bowen & Friends, received a feature on CMT, made her songwriter debut at The Bluebird Cafe, opened for Big & Rich, and performed with country legend Lee Greenwood. With “Single Of The Year,” Maddye Trew continues to build on this impressive foundation, proving she’s an artist with both heart and a clear path to success.
