Friends and fans of Levon Helm gathered at his Woodstock home yesterday
to pay homage and say farewell to the legendary singer and drummer for
The Band. Helm died of cancer last week at age 71. After a private
funeral today, Helm is to be buried in Woodstock Cemetery next to Rick
Danko, The Band’s singer and bassist who died in 1999. Helm, Danko,
Garth Hudson, Robbie Robertson and Richard Manuel’s first album as The
Band included classics such as “The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down” and
“Up on Cripple Creek.” Arkansas Governor Mike Beebe has ordered that
flags fly at half-staff to honor Helm who was an Arkansas native. The
governor issued a proclamation honoring Helm and calling him “an
enormously talented performer and gifted musician whose Arkansas roots
can be heard and felt in his voice and in his music.”
