Legacy of Al Staehely

From Rock ‘n’ Roll Roadie to Legal Eagle: The Dual Life and Enduring Legacy of Al Staehely

By Christian Lamitschka for Country Music News International Magazine

Few figures in the history of music can lay claim to such a uniquely compelling duality as Al Staehely. A third-generation Austinite, Staehely is the only person on the planet to have graced the hallowed stage of Carnegie Hall and provided legal services for the legendary Stevie Ray Vaughan. His life has been a seamless, yet extraordinary, navigation between the high-octane world of rock music and the meticulous discipline of entertainment law.

The Ascent to Spirit: A Lawyer Puts Practice on Pause

Soon after graduating from the University of Texas law school and being admitted to the Texas Bar, Staehely made a decision that would redefine his early career: he put his legal ambitions on hold. Arriving in Los Angeles in 1971, he was quickly recruited to join the iconic psychedelic rock band Spirit, stepping in as the band’s new lead vocalist, bass player, and chief songwriter.

This new iteration of the band took shape with the addition of his brother, Brother John Staehely, who took over lead guitar duties from founding member Randy California. This lineup recorded the album, Feedback, released in the spring of 1972. The album marked a distinct departure for the band, prompting critic Joe Viglione to define the new sound as “a phenomenal reinvention of Spirit.” Al Staehely’s contribution as chief songwriter was central to this creative pivot.

When Spirit eventually splintered, the Staehely Brothers continued their collaboration, releasing the album Sta-Hay-Lee on Epic Records in 1973, cementing their reputation for a sophisticated, songwriting-focused take on rock.

️ The Solo Trail and Creative Collaborations

Following his work with Spirit, Al Staehely embarked on a solo career that demonstrated his enduring commitment to songwriting. Polydor released his first solo album in Europe in 1982, a project later brought stateside by Austin’s Steady Boy Records.

His output continued with an EP and two subsequent albums, most recently, Somewhere in West Texas. Recorded in the atmospheric setting of Marfa, this album saw him collaborate with a roster of Texas heavyweights, including Fran Christina, Scrappy Jud Newcomb, and Chris Maresh, blending his seasoned perspective with the raw, expansive feel of the West Texas landscape.

Staehely’s impact extends far beyond his own recordings. In addition to writing most of the songs for Feedback, the Staehely Brothers’ work, and his solo projects, his songs have been covered by a diverse and celebrated group of artists, including:

  • Marty Balin

  • Bobbie Gentry

  • Patti Dahlstrom

  • Keith Moon (The Who’s drummer)

  • …and many others.

Throughout his career, Staehely has also toured and recorded with a galaxy of rock and folk royalty, including Chris Hillman, Tommy James, Papa John Creach, Jackie Lomax, Hot Tuna, John Cipollina, and Nick Gravenites, underscoring his deep ties within the music community.

⚖️ The Return to Law: Advocate for the Arts

While his musical accomplishments are indelible, Al Staehely’s journey found its second major act back in the legal field. Having initially paused his law career, he returned to practice and has worked as an entertainment attorney for over 40 years.

In this capacity, he leveraged his decades of firsthand experience as a touring musician, songwriter, and recording artist to serve the creative community from the other side of the contract table. His clients have spanned the entire creative ecosystem, including:

  • Artists and Authors

  • Songwriters and Photographers

  • Record and Publishing Companies

  • Production Companies

His unique perspective—one informed by the reality of being on a major rock stage and the necessity of negotiating the fine print—has made him an invaluable advocate. The fact that he was the lawyer who provided counsel to a giant like Stevie Ray Vaughan speaks volumes about the trust placed in his expertise and integrity.

Al Staehely’s career is a testament to the idea that passion and intellect are not mutually exclusive. He remains a singular figure whose life perfectly encapsulates the creative chaos of rock ‘n’ roll and the structured reality of the legal world, truly defining what it means to be a renaissance man in the music industry.
