Keller Cox Care To Look (Between The Lines)

The Architect of Authenticity: Keller Cox Deconstructs the Craft in ‘Care To Look (Between The Lines)’

By Christian Lamitschka for Country Music News International Magazine

In an industry often obsessed with the “overnight success” or the perfectly polished facade, Keller Cox is doing something radically different: he’s showing his work. The Texas singer-songwriter didn’t just stumble into his recent success; he wrote over 100 songs just to find the six that hit the hardest.

With the release of Care To Look (Between The Lines), a deluxe expansion of his recent EP, Cox offers more than just a collection of songs. He offers a masterclass in the “why” behind the music. Recorded at Austin’s famed Matchbox Recording Studio with producer Dwight A. Baker (the hands behind projects for Brandi Carlile and Flatland Cavalry), this 11-track project is a vulnerable, insightful look at an artist who is leaning into his growth in real-time.

Behind the Booth: The Song-by-Song Breakdown

What makes this deluxe edition unique is the “Between The Lines” commentary paired with each track. It’s like a director’s cut for country music fans.

1 & 2. Care To Look

The title track serves as the project’s thesis. Co-written with Luke Stevens and Kerr Rudge, it’s a mid-tempo reflection on mindfulness. In his commentary, Cox explains that the song was born from a shift in perspective—moving away from taking life at face value to finding beauty in the overlooked details. It’s soulful, grounded, and sets a high bar for the lyricism to follow.

3 & 4. All American

Teaming up with Texas titan Josh Abbott, Cox delivers a track that feels like a Friday night under stadium lights. The commentary reveals the collaborative energy of the session, but the song itself is the star—a polished, anthemic piece of heartland country that explains why Cox is already a staple on Texas Country Radio.

5 & 6. 5×7 Rug

This collaboration with Jason Earley and Delaney Ramsdell is arguably the most intimate moment on the EP. It’s a domestic snapshot, using a simple household object to anchor a story of shared space and love. The “Between The Lines” segment highlights how Cox turns mundane observations into relatable poetry.

7 & 8. Sunday Morning Matinee (Without You)

Written solo by Cox, this track is a testament to his individual strength as a storyteller. It’s a classic “empty chair” song, capturing the quiet, stinging realization of absence. The commentary tracks the “moment of clarity” that allowed him to finish this song, and the result is a raw, heartbreaking standout.

9 & 10. I Bet You Do Too

Co-written with Reid Morris and Brandon Ashley, this track leans into the “universal experience.” It’s a song about the shared habits and secret thoughts we all carry. The production here is crisp, allowing Cox’s vocals to drive home the relatability that has earned him over 4.5 million streams.

11. Selling Songs (Work Tape)

The final addition is a raw work tape co-written with Jason Earley and Braden Jamison. Stripped of studio sheen, it showcases Cox’s pure songwriting ability. It feels like a gift to the fans—a “rough draft” that proves the bones of his music are just as strong as the finished product.

From Construction Science to Country Stardom

Keller Cox’s journey isn’t your typical Nashville fairytale. Raised on the sounds of 2000s country, he found his footing while a student at Texas A&M University. Between studying for a degree in Construction Science (which he earned in 2022) and hitting the dancefloor at Hurricane Harry’s, Cox was building a foundation for a different kind of career.

Since committing fully to music, the trajectory has been vertical. From opening for legends like Willie Nelson to charting Top 10 singles like “Damn Good Friends,” Cox has proven he has the grit to match his talent. His 2024 album Good Again, Amen proved he could hang with the heavy hitters, and this deluxe EP confirms he’s not just playing the game—he’s mastering the craft.

“There was a time when I took everything at face value but as I’ve grown and stepped into the world of songwriting, I’ve come to realize that the best things in life are often the ones we miss the first time around.” — Keller Cox

The Verdict

Care To Look (Between The Lines) is a bold move. By revealing the “rough ideas” and late-night sessions, Cox risks breaking the “magic” of the music. Instead, he enhances it. He’s betting on the fact that his audience values authenticity over artifice, and based on the momentum heading into his Spring 2026 Tour, that bet is paying off in spades.
