Jordyn Shellhart’s Primrose stands as a bold and thought-provoking debut, filled with vivid storytelling and emotional weight. Released in May 2023, this album is more than just a collection of songs—it’s an intimate look into Shellhart’s life experiences, confronting themes like loss, resilience, and identity.

Opening with Amelia, a heartfelt narrative of personal reflection, Shellhart sets the tone for an album that doesn’t shy away from heavy subjects. Songs like Who Are You Mad At and Joni offer introspective yet playful takes on relationships and personal struggles, showcasing Shellhart’s ability to blend vulnerability with wit.

However, it’s the raw emotional power of Maybe Someday You’ll Have A Daughter that leaves the most profound mark. Addressing sexual assault, this track is unflinchingly direct, as the narrator envisions a future where the perpetrator faces the same pain. Similarly, Near-Death Experience delves into controversial territory, narrating the perspective of someone almost terminated before birth, further highlighting Shellhart’s courage in tackling difficult subjects.

With tracks like Steal A Man—where she turns the “other woman” trope on its head—and Irrelevant, which narrates personal pain with relatable detail, Shellhart proves herself to be a deft songwriter. Her lyrical talent is no surprise, given her background as a writer for artists like Little Big Town and Kelsea Ballerini.

The production, led by Cameron Jaymes, complements Shellhart’s poignant lyrics without overpowering them. The album balances stripped-back ballads and more upbeat, country-pop tunes, providing a diverse listening experience.

Primrose is an impressive debut that blends contemporary country with a willingness to challenge societal norms. Jordyn Shellhart’s powerful storytelling, combined with her clear, honest voice, ensures this album resonates long after the final track.

Rating: 4.5 out of 5 Stars
