Jordana Bryant Interview

by Savina Todorova for Country Music News International

Jordana Bryant is stepping into the spotlight in her own way as she takes on the role of America’s Wholesome Country Sweetheart. Lighting up rooms with her kindness and presence, Bryant has that “it” factor. She certainly knows her way around a melody. Whether it’s her viral covers of artists including Shawn Mendes and Why Don’t We which have garnered over 4 million views, or her current single “Last First,” the Pennsylvania native carries a voice, which makes connecting to her heart-warming stories effortless.

Savina Todorova: Where did the inspiration for the “Not Sayin’” come from?

Jordana Bryant: With “Not Sayin’”, I really wanted to capture and share the excitement and nerves that go along with telling someone you love them for the first time. I feel like it’s such a common feeling to start to realize that you really like someone but don’t want to be the one to say “I love you” first, and so I thought it would be really fun to put that sentiment into a song!

Savina Todorova: Who inspires you musically?

Jordana Bryant: So many artists inspire me, but I’d say a few of the main ones are Carrie Underwood and Taylor Swift. I love how throughout their careers, they’ve been able to stay really authentic to themselves while still being relatable for their fans. And of course, I love Dolly Parton and Reba McEntire. I find it so inspiring how all four of these artists have really made history as women in country music!

Savina Todorova: What do you think about today’s music industry?

Jordana Bryant: I think today’s music industry is really incredible because of how social media has made it so that you don’t need a record deal to reach fans and share your music with them. While it might take more work to build that following and fan base, I’m so grateful to be able to connect with so many people through social media and get to share my music with them.

Savina Todorova: If you could change one thing about the music industry, what would it be?

Jordana Bryant: I’d bring back live shows! While Covid is still going on, it’s really difficult for live events to be scheduled. And even though I love being able to do virtual shows, I think that there’s a whole other level of connection that live shows bring, so I’d really love to see them come back!

Savina Todorova: As an artist, you do so much from writing, recording, playing shows and more. What do you like best and why?

Jordana Bryant: I honestly love the entire process, but if I had to choose one aspect, I’d say songwriting. For me, music is all about the stories you tell and the messages you send, and I feel like as a songwriter, you can really control what messages you put out into the world, and I think that’s such an awesome way to spread positivity and optimism!

Savina Todorova: How important has the support you received from friends and family been to your success?

Jordana Bryant: My family and friends’ support has been so important to me. I honestly don’t think I could do any of this without them and their endless encouragement. They’re always such cheerleaders, but also really push me to make the best music that I can, and I’m forever grateful for them. And they’re always willing to listen to my new song ideas, even if I send them one practically every day!

Savina Todorova: What was the first moment you realized you’d like to pursue a career in the music industry?

Jordana Bryant: I’ve always loved music, but about 5 years ago when I first started writing, I fell in love with the way that songwriting can create stories that are so vivid you can almost picture yourself in them. I feel like songs like that are so incredible because they can almost be an escape when you listen to them. Also, when I began writing, I started to realize how music can be such an incredible way to bring people together, and that’s when I knew I had to pursue a career in the music industry!

Savina Todorova: You released your debut EP Last First which included “Not Sayin’,” “This Love” and the title track.  How did you decide what would be on the EP?

Jordana Bryant: The songs are actually all related. I love how movies have sequels to continue a story, so I really wanted to try something different on this project and make three of the songs on the EP like a “trilogy”, all following the progression of one relationship!
