Jenna Feeney: Weaving Real Life into Pop-Country Anthems

By Christian Lamitschka for Country Music News International Magazine

Jenna Feeney is quickly establishing herself as one of the most compelling voices in the new wave of Nashville artists, known for crafting deeply relatable songs that blend the raw honesty of Country music with the polished catchiness of Pop. With a songwriting style that is both transparent and vulnerable, Feeney is drawing comparisons to artists like Taylor Swift and Kelsea Ballerini, carving out a space where real-life experiences become universally shared anthems.

The Genesis of a Songwriter

Born in Rockville, Maryland, in 1997, Jenna Feeney’s journey into music began remarkably early. She penned her first song at the tender age of six, immediately discovering a passion for creation that would shape her life. Though she honed her voice in the school choir, her focus shifted seriously to songwriting in her teenage years.

A pivotal moment arrived around age fifteen when she began sharing her performances and original music videos on YouTube. Recognizing her commitment, her parents gifted her a guitar, allowing her to put music to the stories she loved to write. Her early performances were marked by a natural stage presence, confidence, and grace that belied her youth.

This online presence proved to be the spark for her professional career. In the fall of 2014, a talent scout discovered her on YouTube, leading to a collaboration with singer/songwriter/producer Shannon McArthur and Adam B. Smith in Nashville, Tennessee. This partnership resulted in her debut, a four-song EP titled “Truth,” followed in 2016 by her second project, “Beautiful Mess,” which explored themes of love, heartbreak, and freedom. She later released the single “Cigarette” in 2018, produced by Mark Bryan of Hootie & the Blowfish, further diversifying her sonic profile.

Bridging Education and Industry

Jenna Feeney’s path took a strategic turn when she pursued higher education, graduating from the College of Charleston in 2019 with a B.A. in Arts Management, with a concentration in the music industry. This academic background, combined with a few years spent working in the radio industry and performing extensively in Charleston, provided her with a crucial understanding of the business side of music, an invaluable asset in a competitive field.

In 2021, driven by her passion and ambition, Feeney made the inevitable move to the heart of Country music: Nashville, Tennessee. This relocation has marked a significant acceleration in her career, offering new opportunities for writing, performing, and recording.

The Nashville Era: Authenticity in the Studio

Since arriving in Music City, Feeney has focused on creating music that is both timely and timeless. Her sound is consistently described as Country-influenced with a Pop/Alt twist, a reflection of her diverse influences, which include not only Country stars like Kelsea Ballerini and Taylor Swift but also alternative artists like Phoebe Bridgers.

The latest chapter of her career has seen her record at prestigious venues like Starstruck Studios on Music Row—a facility known as “The House That Reba Built.” This experience was a major career highlight, a “pinch-me moment” that connected her to the deep history of the genre.

Recent singles released in 2023 and 2024, such as “What a Thing to Lose,” “Five Foot Three,” “Raining on My Parade,” “Stick With Beer,” and “If Angels Lived in Nashville,” showcase her maturity as an artist. These tracks explore a spectrum of intense emotions:
“What a Thing to Lose” captures the freedom of being fine on your own.

“Raining on My Parade” is a cathartic release of frustrations wrapped in an enjoyable, liberating melody.

“Stick With Beer” is a poignant track about attempting to move forward and realizing personal change in the wake of a relationship.

“If Angels Lived in Nashville” is a deeply personal and soulful tribute to love, loss, and the lingering effects of grief.

Vulnerability as a Trademark

What truly sets Jenna Feeney apart is her unwavering commitment to vulnerability. She writes about real-life experiences without reservation, sharing her heart and sometimes her struggles, including her experiences with anxiety. This openness is a core value, as she feels it connects her powerfully with her audience, making them feel heard and understood. Her stage persona is authentic; what the audience sees is genuinely who she is.

Jenna Feeney is more than just a performer; she is a dedicated songwriter who uses her craft to process the messy, beautiful reality of life. As she continues to perform across Nashville and work on her highly anticipated first full album, Feeney is rapidly proving that her artistic potential is limitless. She is a compelling voice whose honesty and vibrant Pop-Country blend promise to make her a dynamic and enduring force in the industry.
