Jelly Roll Join the Grand Ole Opry

From Inmate to Icon: Jelly Roll Receives Surprise Invitation to Join the Grand Ole Opry on The Joe Rogan Experience

By Christian Lamitschka for Country Music News International Magazine

In a moment that perfectly encapsulates the redemptive power of music, Jelly Roll was stunned with the ultimate honors in country music: an invitation to become the newest member of the Grand Ole Opry.

The surprise took place during an interview on The Joe Rogan Experience, the world’s leading podcast. While discussing his meteoric rise and his current 2026 Grammy® nominations, Jelly Roll was presented with a video message from his longtime mentor and friend, Opry member Craig Morgan.

A Full-Circle Moment of Redemption

The invitation is more than just a career milestone; for Jelly Roll, it is the completion of a journey that began in a prison cell. Years ago, shortly after being released from incarceration, Jelly Roll sat in the audience of the Opry and heard Craig Morgan perform “Almost Home.” He has frequently cited that specific moment as “life-changing,” providing the emotional catalyst he needed to turn his life around.

In the moving video message filmed at the Grand Ole Opry House, Morgan addressed his friend directly:

“I want to take a moment to congratulate you on all the great things happening in your career and thank you for the positive difference you are making in the lives of so many people who need help… Jelly Roll, you are officially invited to become a member of the Grand Ole Opry. It is my honor to say: ‘Welcome to the family, brother.'”

From Debut to Dynasty

Jelly Roll made his official Opry debut on November 9, 2021. In the years since, he has transitioned from a fan-favorite newcomer to a pillar of the community. His dedication to the institution is well-documented; he has mentored rising artists through the Opry NextStage program and hosted live showcases in Texas, proving his commitment to the “past, present, and future” of the genre.

This history with Craig Morgan came full circle previously when the two performed “Almost Home” together on the Opry stage. To commemorate their bond, Morgan once gifted Jelly Roll a hand-written, signed, and framed set of lyrics to the song that saved his life.

An Unstoppable Force in Music

The Antioch, Tennessee native is currently enjoying a historic run. His debut country album, Whitsitt Chapel, broke records as the biggest debut for a country artist in its release year. He has already secured CMA, ACM, Dove, and People’s Choice Awards.

Currently, Jelly Roll is looking toward the 2026 Grammy® Awards, where he is nominated for:

  • Contemporary Country Album of the Year for his #1 Billboard 200 project, Beautifully Broken.

  • Best Country Performance (among others) for his multi-week #1 hit, “I Am Not Okay.”

Celebrating 100 Years of the Opry

The timing of Jelly Roll’s induction coincides with the Opry 100 celebration. Throughout 2026, the Grand Ole Opry is marking a century of broadcasting with “Opry 100 Honors” shows, a special performance at Carnegie Hall, and global events.

Founded in 1925, the Opry remains the longest-running live broadcast in the world. As it celebrates its centennial, the addition of Jelly Roll—an artist who embodies resilience and the bridge between hip-hop, rock, and country—signifies the Opry’s evolving legacy.

The official date for Jelly Roll’s induction ceremony will be announced shortly.
