Brisbane’s Jake Whittaker Announces Debut New Zealand Tour: A High-Energy “Homecoming” Across the Ditch
By Christian Lamitschka for Country Music News International Magazine
The bond between Australia and New Zealand is often defined by friendly rivalry, but for Brisbane-based country artist Jake Whittaker, his upcoming trip across the Tasman Sea is less about competition and more about connection. For the first time in his career, the rising country star is heading to New Zealand for a series of debut performances that feel less like a tour and more like a long-awaited homecoming.
Whittaker, known for his infectious energy and modern country sound, has deep roots “across the ditch.” With family ties firmly planted in Taranaki, Jake spent much of his youth traveling back and forth to New Zealand. The pull of the land was so strong that it eventually inspired his poignant track, “Coming Home,” a song that will undoubtedly serve as the emotional centerpiece of his upcoming dates.
From Brisbane to the “Naki”
While Jake has built a reputation as one of Brisbane’s most exciting country exports, his heart has always been partially stationed in the Shires of New Zealand.
The tour kicks off in the big smoke before heading to the heart of Taranaki:
-
Auckland: Friday, January 30, at the iconic Tuning Fork.
-
Stratford: Saturday, January 31, for the Summer Nights free concert at King Edward Park.
The Stratford performance is particularly sentimental for the singer. With his father’s hometown of Eltham located just ten minutes down the road, the show is effectively a hometown gig.
“This is something I’ve wanted to do for a long time,” Jake shared. “I go back all the time, and I’ve always loved New Zealand. To finally play my own shows there means a lot.”
The Artist: Who is Jake Whittaker?
Jake Whittaker is not your traditional “sit-and-strum” country artist. He has carved out a niche in the Australian scene by blending the storytelling of traditional country with a high-octane, party-starting stage presence.
His music often reflects his dual identity—the laid-back coastal vibes of Queensland mixed with the rugged, soulful influences of his heritage. He is a regular fixture on the Australian festival circuit, known for his ability to turn a quiet room into a roaring celebration. His New Zealand fans can expect:
-
High-Energy Performance: A trademark “country party” atmosphere.
-
Community Spirit: Local Kiwi support acts will join the bill to give the shows a grassroots feel.
-
Cross-Tasman Humour: Jake isn’t afraid to bring a bit of “Aussie flavor” to the stage, even joking about introducing certain Australian traditions to the local crowd.
“Country’s coming to town,” Jake said with a laugh. “If we need to bring shoeys across the ditch, we will.”
A New Annual Tradition?
For Whittaker, these January dates aren’t intended to be a one-off. He views this tour as the beginning of a permanent bridge between his two homes.
“I’d love to get back to New Zealand every year if possible,” he admitted. “I’m really looking forward to finally sharing my music there.”
As the Taranaki region prepares for the Summer Nights festivities, locals and travelers alike are expected to flock to King Edward Park for what promises to be one of the most emotional and energetic performances of the summer.
