From Maryland Sands to Wyoming Winds: Jackson Dean Finds His Compass on Magnolia Sage

By Christian Lamitschka for Country Music News International Magazine

Jackson Dean doesn’t just write songs; he builds landscapes. Since he first rattled Nashville’s windows with the Platinum-selling “Don’t Come Lookin’,” the Maryland native has carved out a space for himself that is entirely off the beaten path. He isn’t interested in the glossy, over-produced trends of the moment. Instead, Dean leans into a “ferocious independence,” a quality that turned his debut Greenbroke and its follow-up On The Back Of My Dreams into critical darlings.

On April 24, Dean returns with his third studio effort, Magnolia Sage. It is a dual-natured, 11-track project that splits its soul between the humid, R&B-infused rhythms of the East Coast (Magnolia) and the restless, rugged expansive grit of the American West (Sage).

The Artist: A Wayward Spirit with a Gravel Tone

Jackson Dean has quickly become one of the most compelling voices in modern country music. Known for a “dusky,” gravel-toned vocal that sounds like it’s been cured in woodsmoke, Dean is a songwriter’s songwriter. After becoming the youngest solo male artist to top the charts with a debut single, he spent 2025 stacking accolades—including his second No. 1 with the haunting “Heavens To Betsy.” Whether he’s opening for legends like Eric Church or headlining his own world tour, Dean’s live show is where his “bone-shaking” talent truly takes flight.

Track-by-Track: The Two Worlds of Magnolia Sage

The album is structured as a conversation between two distinct regions, held together by the thread of Dean’s longtime muse. Here is a look at the journey through the tracklist:

1. Blacktop Blues

A propulsive opener that sets the mood for the journey. It’s got that “vital and frisky” energy Dean is known for, serving as the literal road that connects the East Coast beginnings to the Western horizon.

2. Make A Liar

Already a hit at country radio, this track is “sexy and rugged.” It leans into the Magnolia side of the house—heavy on the groove and dripping with the kind of confidence that only comes from a songwriter who knows exactly who he is.

3. Be Your Man

A soulful standout. This track highlights the “soft touch” Dean mentioned when describing the Magnolia influence. It’s romantic, vulnerable, and features a booming bassline that feels like a heartbeat.

4. 5th Of July

Moving into more ruminative territory, this track captures the “afterparty” of a summer night. It’s a moment of reflection that bridges the gap between the two narrative lenses.

5. Tennessee Moon

A gorgeous, atmospheric piece. With songwriting help from Jessie Jo Dillon, this track feels like a midnight drive through the Southeast, perfectly encapsulating the “soulful” side of the project.

6. Over And Over

One of the first windows we had into this new era. It’s a rhythmic, hypnotic track that explores the “sonically new territory” Dean promised, leaning into the R&B influences of the East.

7. Hey Mississippi

This is “Magnolia” through and through. It’s swampy, humid, and carries a heavy R&B romance that feels like a Maryland beach at dusk.

8. Something Easy

As Dean noted, “Magnolia is something easy.” This track is the sonic equivalent of a slow Sunday. It’s soothing and melodic, showcasing the softer side of his “dusky” vocals.

9. Wildfire

The centerpiece of the “Sage” world. Written with a powerhouse team (including Luke Dick and Chris Tompkins), “Wildfire” starts with steady electric guitar pulses before erupting into a high-voltage chorus. It’s a West Coast love story that is both “powerful and passionate.”

10. Dust On A Dirt Road

Now we are firmly in the West. This track is “rust and a crow on a fence post.” It’s rugged, acoustic-forward, and carries the “inherent restlessness” of a man who can’t stay in one place for too long.

11. Heart On The Range

The album closer. A sweeping, “Sage-inspired” anthem that feels like the wind in your face in Wyoming. It’s the perfect, ruminative end to an album that spans a continent.

The Verdict

Magnolia Sage is Jackson Dean’s most ambitious work to date. By splitting the album into two sonic “worlds,” he manages to honor his Maryland roots while chasing the “wild” spirit that draws him West. It is an eclectic, vital collection that proves Dean isn’t just a singer—he’s a cartographer of the human heart.

“Magnolia is soul… Sage is the wind in your face.” — Jackson Dean
