Interview mit / with Frank Bülow – ACOUSTIC GARDEN
Lamitschka:
Music has many new fans throughout Europe who may be hearing about you for the
first time. How would you describe yourself and the music you play to someone
who has never seen or heard you?
Frank
Bülow: The music of
Acoustic Garden is a perfect mixture of
folk, pop & country. All band members love the sound of the eagles and this
you can hear in every song. Each singer is a lead singer and all together they
sound like a modern Eagles choir. All guys played many years in different cover
bands and so it comes that when the band plays a cover song it´s always a very
special and tasty interpretation of the songs. The original songs of bandleader
F.Buelow shows how songwriting works when you were influenced of Neil Young in
the early days and went through boygroup stuff of the 90 ´ties like Take That
or the Backstreet Boys or Eurodance material like Culture Beat & ATC for
which Buelow wrote a few chart hits between 1996-2001.
Die Musik von Acoustic Garden
ist ein perfekter Mix aus Folk, Pop & Country. Alle Bandmitglieder lieben
den Sound der Eagles und das hört man auch in jedem Ihrer Songs. Jeder Sänger
ist ein Lead Sänger und zusammen klingen Sie wie ein moderner Eagles Chor.
Die eigenen Songs von Bandleader F.Buelow zeigen wie Songwriting funktioniert,
wenn man in frühen Tagen mit Neil Young aufwächst, später von Boygroup Songs a
la Take That oder den Backstreet Boys beeinflusst ist, und auch die Eurodance
Musik der Neunziger eine Rolle spielt mit Acts wie Culture Beat oder ATC für
die Buelow zwischen 19996 und 2001 ein paar Chart Hits schrieb.

How was the last year for you? What were your highlights?
Frank Bülow:2016 was a very creative year for the band, cause we recorded our first album “concept emotional”.We worked together with a very experienced producer Stephan Keller at the “Trick Studio” in Rauenberg. One of the tracks “change the weather” was mixed by Johannes Luley at the mysonictemple studio in LA in the U.S. and the first single “always” Eric Legg from Nashville laid hands on. We shot a great video of “change the weather” in the summer and had a great time!
2016 war ein sehr kreatives Jahr für die Band, denn wir haben uns erstes gemeinsames Album „concept emotional“ aufgenommen. Wir arbeiteten mit einem sehr erfahrenen Produzenten Stephan Keller im „Trick Studio“ in Rauenberg. What is your latest CD and how’s it doing?
Frank
Bülow: We just released the single “always” on 27.10.2017 and
got our first streams and radio plays. The album will be released in February
2018, so we´re so excited about it and we´ll see what happens.
Wir haben ja gerade erst
unsere Single “always” am 27.10.2017 veröffentlicht und unsere ersen Streams
und Radioeinsätze gekriegt. Das Album kommt im Februar 2018 und wir sind alle
sehr aufgeregt und gespannt was passieren wird damit.
Lamitschka:
How did you choose the title for the CD? Is there a story behind the
name?
Frank Bülow:
Of course it is! Many times in my life I went to
different record companies, trying to sell my latest production or songs. What
the A & R Managers always said to me was “you have to do a concept album!”
I always kept that in my head and when we did this album now I was thinking
about what concept this album could have…and when I listen trough all the
songs I knew it immediately “emotion” ist what
it´s all about!
Natürlich
gibt es die! Schon oft in meinem Leben bin ich zu unterschiedlichen
Schallplattenfirmen gegangen um meine neusten Produktionen oder Songs zu
verkaufen. Die A & R Manager der Firmen sagten mir immer „Du musst ein
Konzept Album machen“ Das habe ich immer im Hinterkopf behalten und als wir
diese Album nun machten, dachte ich was für ein Konzept könnte das hier nun haben….und
als ich so durch die Songs nacheinander hörte war es mir sofort klar „Emotion“
ist das um was es hier geht!
Lamitschka:
Do you write the songs yourself? If not, how do you go about finding the songs
for your CD?
Frank Bülow:
Through many years of making music I collected many
songs on my way. Songs that I wrote, songs that friends wrote, real good stuff,
that maybe didn´t get a chance to be heard so far, songs that perfectly fit to
what we wanna do with ACOUSTIC GARDEN. Songs that fit together.
For example the song “the present” on our CD is from my good friend Tom
Cunningham, who did a lot of singer & songwriter showcases with me in
2004/2005 in Berlin, Cologne, Hamburg and Munich. He always performed that song
and touched all hearts in the crowd and mine as well.
I knew I have to record this song in my version one day….so I did!
Durch die vielen Jahre, die ich bereits
Musik mache sammelte ich Lieder ein auf meinem Weg.
Lieder die ich selbst schrieb, Lieder die Freunde schrieben, richtig gutes Material,
was vielleicht noch nicht die Chance bekommen hatte gehört zu werden bislang,
Lieder die perfekt zu dem passen was wir mit ACOUSTIC GARDEN machen wollen,
Lieder die perfekt zusammen passen.
Zum Bespiel der Song „the present“ auf unserer CD ist von meinem guten Freund
Tom Cunningham mit dem ich 2004/2005 einige Singer/Songwriter Live Showcases in
Berlin, Köln, Hamburg und München gemacht habe. Er hat diesen Song immer
gespielt und die Herzen der Menschen sowie auch meines berührt und ich wusste
diesen Song muss ich eines Tage in meiner Version aufnehmen…was ich auch tat!

Please tell us about the songs on your album (influences, etc).
Frank
Bülow: There are many influences that make the sound in the acoustic
garden band. First of all it´s Neil Young & his album “comes a time”. Of
course THE EAGLES and especially the songwriting of Don Henley. Each singer in
the band has a different voice idol like Frank for example Paul Young, Rick
Springfield, John Mayer, Dennis De Young. Frank grew up with the music of
America, Cat Stevens, Poco while some of the other guys were more influenced by
90´s pop, rock & country music.

Sound von Acoustic Garden aus.Als erstes Neil Young und sein Album „comes a time“.
Natürlich die EAGLES und speziell das Songwriting von Don Henley.Jeder Sänger in der Band hat eigene Gesangsidole. Frank
zum Beispiel Paul Young, Rick Springfield, John Mayer, Dennis De Young. Frank
wuchs mit der Musik von America, Cat Stevens & Poco auf während einige der anderen
Jungs mehr von 90´er Pop,Rock & Country Musik beeinflusst wurden.

What is the difference between your last CD and your current one?
Frank Bülow:
The last CD “Mediterranean mind” (2012) was more a
Buelow solo album. Buelow played most of the instruments and recorded in his
own little studio. Some guest musician helped to make it sound bigger. 2018
there´s a real band playing together in a studio with a great sound engineer Stephan
Keller who knew how to create the great band sound you can hear now on “concept
emotional”.
Die letzte CD “Mediterranean
mind” (2012) war mehr ein Buelow Solo Album. Buelow sipelte die meisten
Instrumente selbst und nahm im eigenen kleinen Studio auf. Ein paar Gastmusiker
halfen es größer klingen zu lassen. 2018 spielt eine wahre Band zusammen in
einem Studio mit einem großartigen Mann am Mischpult, der wusste wie die Band
klingen muss auf „concept emotional“.
Lamitschka:
Your current single is being played by radio. What do you feel is special about
this song that makes people want to hear it?
Frank
Bülow: The song has a lot of positive energy, cause it says in
the end it´s all about love. This message will reach everybody and the melody
with the incredible harmonies of the four voices just makes you feel good.
Das Lied hat sehr viel
positive Energie, den es sagt, das es am Ende immer um Liebe geht. Diese
Botschaft erreicht jeden und die Melodie mit den unglaublichen Harmonie der
vier Stimmen lässt Dich einfach ein gutes Gefühl haben.
Lamitschka:
What will your next single be?
Frank
Bülow: We´re not sure about it this time. There a some
candidates. “not ready to lose” is surely one of it, but also “back to basics”
or “the one and only” are possible. More important for us is to bring the album
out and to bring it on stage as soon as possible.
Da sind wir im Moment noch
nicht sicher.Es gibt einige Kandiadten. „not ready to lose“ ist sicher einer davon,
aber auch „back to basics“ oder „the one and only“ sind möglich.Für uns ist es wichtiger das Album rauszubringen und so
schnell wie möglich auf die Bühne damit zu gehen.
Lamitschka:
What kind of songs do you like to record the most?
Frank
Bülow: All kind of songs that fit to us, no matter if it is an
uptemo song or a ballad.
Jede Art von Song der zu uns past,
egal ob es ein schnellerer Song oder eine Ballade ist.
Lamitschka:
What is your favorite song among all the songs you have recorded and what’s the
story behind it?
Frank
Bülow: “Back to basics” is one of that songs. The great Kim
Sanders wrote it as a soul ballad. I recorded the song twice as a rock ballad
and now with ACOUSTIC GARDEN as a country song. It works in all styles, cause
it´s a extraordinary song. I don´t know what´s the story behind for the one who
wrote that lines, but for me it says that each of us should remember where he
comes from, what his roots are. You should always keep this in mind, before you
go higher, faster & farther.
“back to basics” is einer von diesen Songs. The großartige Kim Sanders
hat Ihn als Soulballade geschrieben.Ich
habe Ihn zwei mal aufgenommen, als Rock Ballade und als Country Songs. Er
funktioniert is allen Genres, weil es ein außergewöhnlicher Song ist. Ich weiß
nicht was die Geschichte dahinter für denjenigen ist, der die Zeilen
geschrieben hat, aber für mich bedeutet der Song, dass sich jeder von uns immer
wieder daran erinnern soll wo er her kommt, was die Wurzeln sind. Man sollte
das immer im Auge behalten, bevor man immer höher, schneller und weiter geht.
Lamitschka:
What do you think about today’s music scene versus its post and where do you
see it going in the future?
Frank Bülow:
I think the scene is pretty good! Musician are much
better educated than 30 years ago, which shows a real good quality of songs and
how they are played. For the future I don´t know, but the past showed that
everything comes again and again, like in the fashion.
Ich denke die Szene ist sehr
gut! Musiker sind viel besser ausgebildet als vor 30 Jahren, was eine enorm
gute Qualität der Songs ausmacht und wie sie gespielt sind. Was die Zukunft
bringt weiß ich nicht, aber die Vergangenheit hat gezeigt, das alles immer
wieder kommt, wie in der Mode.
Lamitschka:
What do you think about today’s music industry?
Frank
Bülow: The music industry has overslept many
developments and is always lagging behind. But that´s a great chance for
everybody with new possibilities of the internet to present the own music so
easy on the many platforms where you can place your track and show it to the
world with a few clicks, without the hurdle of first having to catch a record
deal. The bond with your own fans is better than it ever was and so good to
handle, because of the social networking.
Die Musikindustrie hat viele
Entwicklungen verschlafen und hinkt immer hinterher. Aber das ist eine große
Chance für alle mit den neuen Möglichkeiten des Internet die eigene Musik so
einfach zu präsentieren auf den vielen Plattformen, auf denen Du einfach Dein
Track platzieren kannst und mit ein paar Klicks der Welt zeigen kannst, ohne
erst einen Plattenvertrag erhalten zu müssen. Die Bindung zu den eigenen Fans
ist besser als je zuvor und so gut zu handhaben, wegen den sozialen Netzwerken.
Lamitschka:
If you had the chance to change something about the music industry, what would
it be?
Frank
Bülow: I would welcome it, that record companies build up
artists over more than 3 years like they did in the eighties. They should have
a long breath, in which they accompany artists on their path, let them grow, no
matter if the first or second single/album is not selling enough. If they don´t
the charts will be full of ephemera like it as it is already partly today.
Ich würde es begrüßen, dass
Plattenfirmen Künstler wieder aufbauen über mehr als 3 Jahre, wie sie es in den
Achtzigern taten. Sie sollten einen langen Atem haben und Künstler auf Ihrem
Weg begleiten, sie wachsen lassen, unabhängig davon ob die erste oder zweite
Single/Album genug verkaufen. Wenn das nicht passier werden die Charts nur noch
voll sein von Eintagsfliegen wie es ja heute schon zum Teil ist.
Lamitschka:
As an artist, you so many tasks such as recording, touring, interviews. What do
you like best, what’s your favorite activity?
Frank
Bülow: We like one the same as the other. It´s all an important part of the
game and it´s all very excited!
Wir mögen das Eine genauso wie das
Andere. Es ist alles ein wichtiger Teil des Spiels und es ist alles sehr
spannend!
Lamitschka:
What inspired you to become an artist?
Frank Bülow:
I saw Chris Norman from the band Smokie and Leslie
Mcknown from the Bay City Rollers in a german TV Show called DISCO. I watched
it with my parents and told them “this is exactly what I wanna do when I´m grown up”.
Ich sah Chris Norman von Smokie und
Leslie Mcknown von den Bay City Rollers in einer Deutschen TV Sendung DISCO. Ich
schaute das mit meinem Eltern und sagte Ihnen „das ist genau das was ich machen
will wenn ich groß bin“.
Lamitschka:
What inspired you to become a songwriter?
Frank
Bülow: To say something with your own words and find your own
melodies to it that´s freedom and such a exciting task. It helps you to process
things and shows the difference between you and
those who just sing along.Etwas mit Deinen eigenen Worten zu sagen und
eigene Melodien dazu zu finden das ist Freiheit und eine so spannende Aufgabe. Es
hilft Dir Dinge zu verarbeiten und es zeigt den Unterschied zwischen Dir und
denen die nur nachsingen.

What does it take to be a music icon?
Frank Bülow:
Authenticity, charisma, endurance, success,
qualityAuthenzität,

Lamitschka:
What’s unique about you that will differentiate you from other artists?
Frank
Bülow: Certainly others can judge better, but I think it´s the
way we perform our music and the many experiences each of the band members
brings into the songs and that makes the whole thing special.Das können andere sicher besser beurteilen,
aber ich denke die Art wie wir unsere Musik präsentieren und die vielen
Erfahrungen die jedem Bandmitglied mitbringt und in die Songs einbringt machen
das Ganze so speziell.
Lamitschka: What moments in your career stand out in your memory as
highlights and achievements which you are proud of?
Frank
Bülow: I guess I should tell you now about prizes I won or
playing in front of 20.000 people in a soccer stadium, but the funny thing is
it´s more something like when I was asked to sing the American hymn for a
football allstar team and one of the players said before I started “I hope you
know the words cause we don´t….” To have the whole attention for a few minutes
and see the players holding their caps in front of their chest and nod in
appreciation because of may singing…that was impressive…
Ich vermute Ich sollte nun von
Preisen erzählen die ich gewonnen habe oder wie ich vor 20.000 Leuten in einem
Fußball Stadion gespielt habe, aber es ist mehr sowas wie als ich gefragt wurde
für eine Football Allstar Team die amerikansiche Nationalhymne zu singen, wo
einer der Spieler bevor ich anfing zu mir sagte „ich hoffe Du kennst die Worte,
denn wir kennen sie nicht….“ Die gsanze Aufmerksamkeit für einige Minuten zu
haben und zu sehen wie die Spieler da standen mit Ihren Mützen vor der Brust
haltend, wie sie anerkennend nickten wegen meinen Gesangs…das war
beeindruckend….
Lamitschka: When you get time off, how do you like to relax?
Frank
Bülow: Spend time with the family, sauna, wellness, reading,
eating, sleeping, watching movies

Lamitschka: What has been the biggest disappointment in your life?
Frank
Bülow: A friend, that never has been a friendEin Freund, der nie ein Freund gewesen ist

What can your fans expect to see when they see you in concert?
Frank
Bülow: Big fun and a great show, good vibes with lots of energy

Lamitschka: What’s the best compliment a fan has ever given you?
Frank
Bülow: A
girl from London send us an email after a gig and wrote that she never heard
voices with such soul in it.Ein Mädchen aus London schrieb un seine Mail
nach einem Auftritt und sagte sie hat noch nie Stimmen mit so viel Soul gehört.

What’s your favorite song that you wish you could have recorded?
Frank
Bülow: “Pretty maids all in a row” by the Eagles
