Greylan James, a name already synonymous with country music success, is stepping out from behind the songwriter’s curtain and into the spotlight. With a string of chart-topping hits under his belt, crafted for some of the genre’s biggest names, James is now making his own mark on Country radio with his debut single, “Wait Til You Have Kids.”
This transition from sought-after songwriter to burgeoning artist is a natural progression for James, whose talent has been evident for years. His pen has gifted the country music landscape with anthems like Jordan Davis’s No. 1 hit “Next Thing You Know,” Kenny Chesney’s “Happy Does,” and Cole Swindell’s current hit, “Forever To Me.” These successes, culminating in an ACM Award and a BMI Award, have solidified his reputation as a master craftsman of country storytelling.
“Over the past few years, I’ve been blessed enough to hear songs I wrote on Country radio, but since I was a kid, I’ve had a dream in the back of my mind of hearing my own voice on my favorite stations,” James shares. This dream is now a reality with “Wait Til You Have Kids,” a poignant and relatable track that explores the transformative power of parenthood.
Co-written with Matt Roy and produced by Jason Massey and Brock Berryhill, “Wait Til You Have Kids” delves into the shifting priorities and evolving perspectives that come with raising children. The song, inspired by a familiar parental adage, resonates with its honest and heartfelt portrayal of life’s transitions.
James’s journey to this point is a testament to his dedication and passion. From his childhood in Knoxville, Tennessee, where his Papaw gifted him his first guitar, to his years spent honing his craft in Nashville, James has consistently pursued his musical dreams. He’s paid his dues, playing every imaginable venue, from tailgates and patios to dive bars and even funerals, all in the pursuit of his vision.
His songwriting prowess has earned him cuts from a who’s who of country music royalty, including Kenny Chesney, Chris Young, Cole Swindell, Darius Rucker, Chris Janson, Bailey Zimmerman, and BRELAND. His co-writing credit on Jordan Davis’s “Next Thing You Know” not only garnered him his first No. 1 hit but also an ACM Award for Song of the Year, a BMI Award, and a CMA Award nomination.
Despite his remarkable success as a songwriter, James is now ready to step into his own spotlight. With “Wait Til You Have Kids” climbing the charts, he’s proving that his talent extends beyond the writing room.
James’s live performances are further solidifying his rising star status. Having recently completed a 17-date run on Ashley Cooke’s “your place Tour,” he’s connecting with audiences across the country. And with a summer filled with fair and festival appearances, he’s poised to expand his fanbase even further.
Greylan James’s story is one of perseverance, talent, and a deep-seated love for country music. He’s proven his ability to craft hit songs for others; now, he’s ready to share his own voice with the world. “Wait Til You Have Kids” is just the beginning of what promises to be an exciting new chapter in his already impressive career.
