Bluegrass Boost: Gareth Leach & The Narratives of Hope Inject Fresh Energy into John Farnham’s “Reasons”

After a brief hiatus, Australian outlaw country artist Gareth Leach and his band, The Narratives of Hope, are making a triumphant return with their vibrant new single, “Reasons,” out since November 7th via indie country label RTC Records. The track serves as the first taste of their upcoming EP, Blues, Grass & Gospel, scheduled for an early 2026 release.
Gareth Leach has cemented his place in the Australian music landscape as an outlaw country artist known for his hard-hitting, introspective, and often punk-tinged approach to the genre. His dedication to challenging stylistic boundaries and delivering music with attitude was recently validated by the success of his 2023 album, Gareth Leach & The Narratives of Hope, which topped the Official Australian ARIA Charts. The band also secured a 2024 Golden Guitar nomination for their collaboration hit, “Big Ole Feelings.”
Tipping the Cap to a Legend
“Reasons” is an ambitious undertaking: a bluegrass reimagining of a classic song by Australian icon John Farnham. Farnham, a legendary singer whose career spans over five decades, is best known for the internationally chart-topping single “You’re the Voice” and his album Whispering Jack, which is the highest-selling album in Australian history by a domestic artist.
Leach was inspired to perform “Reasons” live—and eventually record it—by its “bright, optimistic message” during a time when there was widespread concern for Farnham’s health. The band quickly realized the cover was a “crowd favourite,” making its official release a natural choice for their fans.
Gareth Leach acknowledged the difficulty of the task:
“Doing a bluegrass cover of a song can be a pretty tricky thing to pull off without being super cheesy, so we were very cautious to not cross into that territory. This song, in particular, is so much fun for us to play and it was important for us to capture that whilst also staying faithful in tipping our caps to the great man, John Farnham.”
They succeed masterfully. Instead of sounding like a novelty track, “Reasons” becomes a genuinely joyful and high-energy country anthem, demonstrating how genre translation can breathe new life into familiar melody and sentiment.
A Lively, Upbeat Bluegrass Arrangement
The recording of “Reasons” perfectly captures the infectious energy of The Narratives of Hope’s live shows. The arrangement is characterized by a bright, lively bluegrass backbone that supports Leach’s powerful, sincere vocals.
Produced by Leach himself, the song features a lineup of expert musicians who ensure the bluegrass interpretation is both authentic and fresh:
-
Gareth Leach: Lead Vocals, Acoustic Guitar
-
Hamish Davidson: Fiddle, Banjo, and Mandolin
-
Shane McGrath: Lead Guitar
-
Richard Neville: Percussion
-
Adam Keenan: Upright Bass, Backing Vocals
-
Anthony McCormick: Backing Vocals
The combined instrumental work is crisp and dynamic, driven by Hamish Davidson’s spirited contributions on fiddle, banjo, and mandolin. The inclusion of percussion from Richard Neville gives the track an edge and punch that separates it from traditional bluegrass, aligning it more closely with Leach’s alt-country foundation. The upright bass from Adam Keenan adds a warm, traditional thump, creating a compelling rhythm section that is both tight and danceable.
“Reasons” is a testament to Gareth Leach & The Narratives of Hope’s ability to innovate within their genre while honoring a national musical treasure. It’s the quintessential feel-good country anthem with a new edge, perfect for any Aussie country, party, or backyard BBQ playlist as it builds anticipation for the full Blues, Grass & Gospel EP in 2026.
