Felicity Dowd, a name increasingly whispered with admiration in Australian music circles, has unveiled her latest single, “Built Like Us,” and it’s resonating deeply with listeners across the nation. Released on April 14th, the track isn’t just climbing charts; it’s striking an emotional chord, tapping into the universal experience of defining “home.”

The accolades are already rolling in, with “Built Like Us” reaching the coveted No. 1 spot on the AMRAP Regional Charts, a testament to the power of community radio’s embrace. Its impact extends further, landing at No. 17 on the Country Radio Charts and No. 6 on the 2TM Chart. From Today’s Country 94One to ABC Country’s Saturday Night Country and Grass Roots, and a multitude of community stations, the airwaves are alive with Dowd’s poignant reflection.

The genesis of “Built Like Us” lies in a significant personal shift for Felicity. As she stood on the cusp of adulthood, moving out of her family home just shy of her eighteenth birthday, a profound realization dawned. While possessions could be packed and new surroundings established, the intangible essence of family couldn’t be boxed and transported. This moment of understanding forms the emotional bedrock of the song.

“It doesn’t feel like home at first because you can take your things but not your family,” Felicity explains, articulating a sentiment many who have left familiar surroundings will recognize. “And then you realise home is not a place; it’s the people you surround yourself with.” This simple yet profound truth lies at the heart of “Built Like Us,” transforming it from a personal anecdote into a shared experience.

Long before its official digital release, “Built Like Us” had already found a special place in Felicity’s live performances since 2023. Audiences, connecting with the bittersweet emotions of leaving home, embraced the song as their own. “It’s not even just about family; it’s about chosen family too,” Felicity elaborates, broadening the scope of the song’s message. “Anyone who has spent time away from home knows that feeling—not just missing the place, but missing the people and the emotions they bring.”

Felicity Dowd is no stranger to recognition. Crowned the 2023 Youth Folk Artist of the Year at the Australian Folk Awards and a two-time Toyota Star Maker Grand Finalist, she has been steadily forging her unique path in the musical landscape, a space where the storytelling heart of folk intertwines with the melodic soul of country. “Built Like Us” beautifully encapsulates this evolving sound, a testament to her artistic growth.

“’Built Like Us’ is one of my favourite songs that I’ve ever written,” she shares, her passion evident. “It takes everything I’ve been working towards—writing about home, family, and belonging—and brings it to another level. I want it to almost define my artistry.” The fact that this deeply personal and resonant track remained unreleased digitally until now has only heightened the anticipation among her growing fanbase, who have until now only experienced its power in a live setting.

As she balances her burgeoning music career with her upcoming mid-2026 graduation from the University of Wollongong, Felicity continues to navigate the country in her trusty caravan, affectionately named Joni Hitchell. Her impressive festival resume speaks volumes about her dedication and talent, featuring appearances at prestigious events like the Port Fairy Folk Festival, Woodford Folk Festival, Tamworth Country Music Festival, and many more. She has also shared the stage with notable artists such as Ash Grunwald, further solidifying her place in the Australian music scene.

Adding another string to her bow, Felicity currently serves as the NSW Folk Federation Youth Folk Ambassador for 2024/2025. Looking ahead, she is set to join Lyn Bowtell’s Paper Cut Tour in Queensland in May and will perform at The Beer Shed on August 2nd.

With the release of “Built Like Us,” Felicity Dowd isn’t just delivering a catchy tune; she’s offering a poignant reflection on the essence of connection and belonging. It’s a song that reminds us that while physical spaces may change, the bonds we forge and the people we hold dear are what truly define “home.” In capturing this universal truth with such heartfelt honesty, Felicity Dowd continues to solidify her position as one of Australia’s most compelling young voices.
