A Half-Century of Harmony: The 51st Annual Father’s Day Bluegrass Festival Returns to Grass Valley

By Christian Lamitschka for Country Music News International Magazine

For over five decades, the pine-scented air of the Sierra Nevada foothills has served as the backdrop for one of California’s most storied musical traditions. The California Bluegrass Association (CBA) has officially unveiled the lineup for the 51st Annual Father’s Day Bluegrass Festival, set to transform the Nevada County Fairgrounds in Grass Valley into a picker’s paradise from June 18–21, 2026.

Spanning three stages and featuring more than 30 bands, the festival is more than just a concert series; it is a multi-generational pilgrimage for bluegrass fans that combines world-class performances with a legendary “parking lot” jamming culture that often lasts until the sun peaks over the Sierra.

The Return of the Legends: The Bluegrass Cardinals

The centerpiece of this year’s festival is a momentous reunion of The Bluegrass Cardinals. A cornerstone of the genre since their formation in 1974, the Cardinals were pioneers of the “California Bluegrass” sound before making their mark nationally.

Founded by the late banjoist Don Parmley alongside David Parmley and Randy Graham, the group was celebrated for its breathtakingly tight harmonies and virtuoso instrumentation. Having been inducted into the Bluegrass Hall of Fame in 2025, their 2026 reunion stands as a high-water mark for the festival, bringing a piece of bluegrass history back to its West Coast roots.

A Modern Roots Revival

While the festival honors the legends, it remains firmly committed to the future of the genre. Leading the contemporary charge is the Sam Grisman Project. Led by bassist Sam Grisman (son of the legendary David “Dawg” Grisman), this rotating collective explores the deep musical kinship between David Grisman and Jerry Garcia, offering a soul-stirring blend of traditional bluegrass and American acoustic exploration.

The 2026 lineup highlights include:

  • The Po’ Ramblin’ Boys: The high-energy, Grammy-nominated ambassadors of traditional bluegrass.

  • Missy Raines & Allegheny: Led by the most decorated bassist in International Bluegrass Music Association (IBMA) history.

  • Bronwyn Keith-Hynes: A powerhouse fiddler and songwriter currently at the top of her game.

  • Bruce Molsky & Darol Anger: Two masters of the fiddle coming together for a rare collaborative set.

  • Emerging Favorites: The Price Sisters, Broken Compass Bluegrass, Hard Drive, and the Cali Cutups.

In addition to these national touring acts, the CBA will soon announce 15 more California-based bands, underscoring the organization’s mission to support the local bluegrass ecosystem.

More Than Music: The Grass Valley Experience

What sets the Father’s Day Festival apart is its immersive environment. As Twangville.com aptly noted:

“It was truly refreshing to spend a weekend listening to great music without the hassle of long lines, overcrowded stages, and nose-bleeding prices.”

The 90-acre fairgrounds serve as a temporary city for music lovers, featuring:

  • The “Best Jamming West of the Rockies”: From beginner circles to master-level improvised sessions, the jamming culture is the festival’s heartbeat.

  • The Youth Academy & Kids on Bluegrass: An instructional camp and audition-based program that allows young musicians to learn from pros and eventually perform on the main stage.

  • Square Dancing & Workshops: Attendees can trade their instruments for dancing shoes or attend workshops to learn techniques directly from the performers.
