Cowpunk Escape Velocity: Erik Vincent Huey Returns with the High-Octane “The Hatfield Action”
By Christian Lamitschka for Country Music News International Magazine
If his 2023 debut Appalachian Gothic was an introspective, deep-dive into the haunted hollows of his heritage, Erik Vincent Huey’s latest single is the sound of the engine starting and the tires screaming toward the state line.
Released as the lead harbinger for his forthcoming solo LP, “Fort Defiance” (due February 13, 2026), “The Hatfield Action” is a masterclass in high-energy Americana. Premiering today via a new music video in Magnet magazine, the track captures the raw, kinetic energy that has defined Huey’s career from his days fronting the “cowpunk” favorites The Surreal McCoys to his evolution into a solo powerhouse.
What is “The Hatfield Action”?
The song’s title carries a certain mythic weight, sounding like a forgotten piece of folklore or a dangerous backwoods ritual. However, the origin is much more spontaneous.
“Truth is, I have no earthly idea what the phrase means,” Huey admits with a laugh. “Other than the Surreal McCoys were on an extended hiatus and Hatfield Action seemed like the opposite of McCoy Inaction. But I’ll tell you one damn thing—every time we play it live, the crowd starts dancing.”
That dance-floor magnetism is evident in the lyrics, which play out like a rock ‘n’ roll incantation: “Hit the backbeat hard / Shake it way down South / It’ll put a pretty song / In a sad girl’s mouth…” It’s a song about the “psychotic reaction” of a room losing its collective mind to a heavy beat—a sentiment Huey delivers with his signature grit.
A “Godfather” at the Helm
To capture this energy, Huey enlisted Eric “Roscoe” Ambel, widely known as the “Godfather of Americana.” Recorded at Ambel’s Cowboy Technical Services in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, the production bears the hallmarks of Ambel’s legendary career with the Del-Lords and Joan Jett.
The record is a collaborative tour de force, featuring:
-
Special Guest Vocals: Tommy Stinson (The Replacements, Guns N’ Roses) and the incomparable Sarah Borges.
-
The Band: Musical backing from Baltimore power-pop legends Starbelly (Bryan Ewald, Cliff Hillis, Dennis Schocket, and Greg Schroeder), who previously toured with Huey.
-
Additional Firepower: Contributions from Keith Christopher (Lynyrd Skynyrd) and Huey’s Surreal McCoys bandmate Tim Smith.
About the Artist: Erik Vincent Huey
Huey’s music is a direct reflection of his DNA. A descendant of four generations of coal miners from the banks of the Monongahela River, he grew up at the intersection of Appalachian tradition and the 1970s punk explosion.
| Feature | Details |
| Roots | West Virginia/Pennsylvania coal mining country. |
| Influences | The Clash, X, and the Sex Pistols mixed with Johnny Cash and George Jones. |
| Legacy | Frontman of The Surreal McCoys (as “Cletus McCoy”), earning over 3.5M Spotify streams. |
| Previous Work | Appalachian Gothic (2023), called a “mesmerizing, major work” by American Songwriter. |
While his previous album was hailed as “the Appalachian Tommy,” the upcoming Fort Defiance represents a shift in perspective. According to Huey, this new collection is about “achieving escape velocity out of Appalachia and into the larger world.”
The Verdict
“The Hatfield Action” isn’t just a single; it’s a statement of intent. It proves that while you can take the man out of the mountains, you can’t take the drive out of the man. If this track is any indication, Fort Defiance is set to be one of the most essential rock-meets-Americana releases of 2026.
