Emmylou Harris and Rodney Crowell: Two Friends With Their Second Duet Album “The Travelling Kind”

Emmylou Harris and Rodney Crowell: Two Friends With Their
Second Duet Album “The Travelling Kind”
Emmylou Harris & Rodney Crowell’s latest effort in the
studio is made to sound effortless. The voices on “The Traveling
Kind” are relaxed and convey tenderness; they are melancholy and powerful
at the same time. There is a perfection in the production that shows that less
is more – no more instruments than necessary and no less. It is a follow up
from Grammy Award winning “Old Yellow Moon”, their first duet album that
was released in early 2013, although they have different producers: “Old
Yellow Moon” was produced by Brian Ahern and “The Traveling Kind”
by Joe Henry. The new duet album is starting where the first one left off
because of this particular line in the title track “Old Yellow Moon” (which
also is the last track on that album): “But still I’m making my way into the heart of an unknown highway”, and then this new release of May 12, 2015
has the title track “The Traveling Kind” as its opening song.
Where this album travels is to blues-ish “Weight Of The
World” and “Bring It On Home To Memphis”, to bluegrass in
“Just Pleasing You”, country neostyle “If You Lived Here, You’d
Be Home Now”, the “Diamonds & Dirt”-feeling song “No
Memories Hanging Round” and the Lucinda Williams “I Just Wanted To See
You So Bad”. All made with respect for both styles of the Americana singer/songwriters.
The two four decade long friends have voices that blend
extremely well and “The Traveling Kind” is a very smooth listening
experience with the ability to transfer you from emotional place to place with
a smile – though journeying through the land of complexity – because it all ends
with a dance of joy.
