By Andy Crust for Country Music News International Magazine
Dolly Parton’s “Smoky Mountain DNA” is more than just an album; it’s a vibrant and mesmerizing testament to the enduring power of Appalachian heritage, woven together with contemporary artistry. This collection serves as an authentic celebration of the Smoky Mountains’ rich cultural roots, offering listeners a tapestry of compelling storytelling, heartfelt vocals, and soul-stirring instrumentation.
A true highlight of the album is the captivating presence of Jada Star. Her voice is a revelation – possessing both warmth and power, it evokes a sense of nostalgia while simultaneously radiating fresh vitality. Jada’s ability to forge an emotional connection with each lyric shines brightly, whether she’s delivering a tender ballad or an uplifting anthem. Her performance on “The Orchard” is particularly breathtaking, showcasing her impressive range and expressive storytelling. She brings a timeless quality to the album, grounding it in tradition while also elevating it to contemporary relevance.
The production of “Smoky Mountain DNA” is flawless. Lush harmonies and dynamic instrumentation blend seamlessly with the raw, organic feel of the record. Pedal steel, acoustic guitars, and haunting melodies intertwine, creating an atmosphere that transports listeners to the misty peaks of the Smokies.
A conversation with Jada Star provided further insight into “The Orchard”:
1. What was your inspiration behind the song “The Orchard”?
“When my aunt reached out to everyone about being part of a family project, I was so excited,” Jada shared. “But I really wanted to contribute something that told her and everybody participating how much they mean to me. I knew a song about our family and the people we learned everything from would be perfect. Most of my family stories start with the sentence ‘My grandmother…’, so that’s where I started, and it just went from there.”
2. Is this the first time you have been on an album with your mum?
“Yes!” Jada exclaimed.
And if so, how proud are you to have made this album and, of course, to share it with your Mum and other family members too?
“Truly!” Jada responded. “It’s been the most special experience! I’m so blessed and honored to be a part of it, and we really hope everyone enjoys it.”
“Smoky Mountain DNA” is an experience, not just an album. It pays homage to the rich musical legacy of the Smoky Mountains while forging its own unique identity. Jada Star’s contributions are undoubtedly one of the album’s strongest assets, making this record a must-listen for anyone who appreciates heartfelt music that resonates deeply.
