Dale Watson If You Really Love Me (Outlive Me)

The Weight of Love and Longevity: Dale Watson Bares His Soul in “If You Really Love Me (Outlive Me)”

By Christian Lamitschka for Country Music News International Magazine

While much of country music is preoccupied with the thrill of the chase or the sting of a breakup, Dale Watson is looking further down the road—at the quiet, heavy reality of what it means to grow old together. The “Ameripolitan” pioneer has just released his new single, “If You Really Love Me (Outlive Me),” and it’s a masterclass in songwriting that finds the profound within the personal.

This ballad serves as the second glimpse into Watson’s forthcoming album, Unwanted, arriving April 24th via 40 Below Records.

A “Selfish” Request for Survival

“If You Really Love Me (Outlive Me)” is a poignant reflection on loss, survival, and the inherent fear of being the one left behind. It’s a song born from the hard-won perspective of a man who has seen his fair share of goodbyes. Watson describes the track as a “selfish” plea, though listeners will likely find it incredibly selfless.

“When you’ve lived awhile unfortunately you will lose people,” Watson explains. “At some point your heart weighs heavy with that knowledge that we are here for a short time, but worse yet, so are our loved ones. So, this is my selfish way of asking my loved ones to take care of themselves for me.“

Musically, the track is a lean, breathing piece of art. Backed by The Lonestars, Watson is joined by a stellar cast including Celine Lee, The Memphians, Katie Shore (of Asleep at the Wheel), and pianist Matt Hubbard. The result is a sound that doesn’t just play notes; it breathes.

Building on Momentum

The new single follows on the heels of “Willie Waylon And Whiskey,” a track that has already become a darling of the roots music scene. Premiered by Holler and featured in Taste of Country and The Bluegrass Situation, the first single even found a home on SiriusXM’s Outlaw Country.

While that track leaned into the outlaw spirit, “If You Really Love Me (Outlive Me)” showcases the emotional depth that has kept Watson relevant for over four decades.

The Forthcoming Album: Unwanted

Due this April, Unwanted promises to be another defiant stand for American roots music. Entirely written and produced by Watson himself, the album is a “hard-hitting blast” of the genres he has spent 40 years championing:

  • Honky-Tonk

  • Outlaw Country

  • Western Swing

  • Rockabilly

Watson famously coined the term “Ameripolitan” to describe this specific, authentic blend of styles, and Unwanted sounds like it will be the definitive statement on that legacy.

About Dale Watson

Dale Watson is one of American roots music’s true originals. A fiercely independent artist, he has spent 40 years carving a path that bypasses the polish of mainstream Nashville in favor of raw honesty and instrumental excellence. Whether he’s fronting The Lonestars or producing his own records, Watson remains the gold standard for modern honky-tonk and western swing.
