Breaking Chains in the Outback: Daisy Cotton Swings the Axe on “Family Tree”

By Christian Lamitschka for Country Music News International Magazine

In the vast, sun-drenched landscape of Australian country music, few voices possess the specific blend of grit and grace found in Daisy Cotton. Following the success of her award-winning debut and her recent transition into a more bluegrass-focused sound, Cotton has returned with a single that is as heavy in theme as it is light on its feet.

“Family Tree” is a high-octane, alt-country anthem that serves as a bold declaration of independence from generational burdens. It is a song about looking at the roots that raised you and deciding which ones are worth keeping—and which ones need to be cut away.

The Artist: From Hospital Shifts to Heartland Melodies

Daisy Cotton’s journey to the forefront of the Australian alt-country scene is as authentic as her lyrics. Born in the coastal town of Bowen, Queensland, and raised across the small towns of the Aussie coastline, Cotton grew up surrounded by the sounds of Kasey Chambers, Dolly Parton, and Johnny Cash.

After years working in a hospital-based career, the Perth-based mother of two rediscovered her passion for songwriting under the mentorship of Aussie legend Bill Chambers. Her debut album, Wildfires & Daisies (2023), was a soul-stirring introduction, earning her the 2025 Alt-Country Song of the Year at the WACMA awards. Now, working with bluegrass luminaries like Jim Fisher and Ian Simpson, Cotton is entering her “bluegrass-infused” era—a sound she describes as “boots kicked off, tempo high, and the drama’s higher.”

Song Review: “Family Tree”

Genre: Alt-Country / Bluegrass

Release Date: December 5, 2025

The Sound: A Bluegrass-Aussie Fusion

“Family Tree” is a masterful bridge between two worlds. It draws heavily on the rapid-fire storytelling traditions of American bluegrass, but it is anchored by a distinctly Australian “country soul.” The production is crisp and organic, featuring high-tempo acoustic arrangements that give the track a restless, driving energy. It feels less like a studio recording and more like a front-porch jam session that happened to be caught on tape.

The Lyrics: Swinging the Axe

The song tackles the concept of “generational burdens”—the traits, traumas, and expectations passed down through bloodlines. While the subject matter is deep, Cotton avoids the pitfalls of being overly somber. Instead, she approaches the topic with a sense of defiance and liberation.

The centerpiece of the track is the explosive, infectious chorus:

“I wanna climb on down and set myself free!”

It’s a line designed to be shouted at full volume, capturing that specific feeling of relief when you finally step out from the shadow of the past. It’s “thought-provoking” country at its best—music that makes you think while your boots are already moving.

The Verdict

“Family Tree” is a standout moment in Daisy Cotton’s discography. It takes the “sweet and soft” country tones of her earlier work and infuses them with a newfound “grit.” It’s a danceable, radio-ready hit that manages to carry significant emotional weight without ever losing its “highway-speed” momentum.

The Upcoming EP: Flowers

“Family Tree” serves as a primary look at Cotton’s upcoming EP, Flowers. Brought to life at Jim Fisher’s kitchen table, Jim co-produced the EP alongside Mark Donohoe (Apollo 10 Productions) in Western Australia. The project promises to further explore this high-energy bluegrass direction. Each track was mixed and mastered by Mark Donohoe. With the “drama higher” and the musicianship top-tier, Daisy Cotton is proving that she isn’t just a storyteller—she’s a force of nature in the Aussie music scene.
