Lamitschka: What is your favorite song
among all the songs you have recorded and what’s the story behind it?

Answer: We must remember that my alter
ego Okefenokee Joe has also written and recorded many songs. And on
all of his songs his name is on the copyright as writer of both words
and music. Most of his songs deal with nature and wildlife and the
preservation of both. All of his songs are honest sometimes extremely
powerful messages concerning our responibilities to this earth we all
live upon. And with the exception of my newest and unfinished Dick
Flood song, which I am currently in the laborous process of writing,
I believe my favorite song is an Okefenokee Joe masterpiece titled
“Playing Guessing Games with Life“. As I was writing the song my
‘song writer instinct’ told me that it is perfect for none other than
Mr. Willie Nelson. Now Willie and me knew each other pretty well way
back in the late fifties and early sixties in Nashville, Tennessee.
This was long before he and many others that I knew way back then
made it to the big time and were inducted into the Nashville Country
Music Hall of Fame. I have tried in vain over the past several years
to reach Mr. Willie and present my song to him. It is a great piece
of timeless material and I have not given up on trying to reach Mr.
Willie. Maybe this interview will help me accomplish my mssion. Here

Lamitschka: Music has many new fans
throughout Europe who may be hearing about you for the first time.
How would you describe yourself and the music you play to someone who
has never seen or heard you?

Answer: My name is Dick Flood, I am 88
years old,…. and before I go any further let me explain that I have
an alter ego. I invented him the year I turned 41. His name is
‘Okefenokee Joe’. He is a self proclaimed wildlife evangelist. He
writes, sings, and records many of his own songs devoted to
protecting and preserving nature, wildlife and the sadly sagging
environment. Whereas I (Dick Flood) write, sing and record what I
call ‘people songs’. In other words; Songs about people, love and
life. And as Dick Flood on all of my shows for the public I tell my
stories of my early recording and song writing sucesses, and of
course my personal association with many of the biggest country music
stars of the 60s. The ‘Golden Era of Country Music’. I am an American
citizen of German decent. I am six feet two inches tall and I weigh
about 250 lbs of what used to be solid muscle. My long what used to
be dark brown hair is shiny silvery gray and I have just recently
decided to let it keep right on growing until the day I die. Ha ha
ha! It’s over my shoulders already! At 88 years old who cares!?. Ha
ha ha.

WHO IS OKEFENOKEE JOE/DICK
FLOOD?

Inducted into the Atlanta Country Music
Hall of Fame, the Georgia Family Entertainers Hall of Fame, and
dubbed “A Living Georgia Icon” in a book entitled “Georgia
Icons”, written by Don Rhodes of the Augusta Chronicle, OKEFENOKEE
JOE’S professional musical career began in the mid 50’s. Under
his given name of DICK FLOOD. He teamed up with army buddy Billy
Graves, formed a duet, called themselves ‘The Country Lads’,
became regulars on the Jimmy Dean CBS TV Morning Country Music Show,
and recorded for Columbia Records.

there, which he then transforms into beautiful country songs in his
“free” time. Fritsch himself says that this album is his
favorite of his three previous releases and I have to agree with him.
