Life has a way of piling up. Between releasing a book, teaching writing fellowships, critiquing short stories, and attempting to build a publishing company, my schedule has been relentless lately. I chose to review The Infamous Stringdusters based solely on their name; I was looking for a mellow Americana vibe that could help me sink into my bed and finally find some peace…

Album Review: Stephen Hunley – The Other Side of Never – By Preshias Harris for Country Music News International Magazine https://fb.watch/Fk69d9oOmp/
In the modern music landscape, it is becoming increasingly difficult to fit an album into a single slot. Whether it’s country, pop, rock, or folk, the lines are blurring—which is likely why the “Americana” label was invented in the first place. But as the jazz legend Duke Ellington once famously said, “If it sounds good, it is good.”…

Album Review: Akasa – Portal – By Jeremy Frost for Country Music News International Magazine https://fb.watch/Fk5G0-5qkV/
I’ll admit, I chose to review Akasa strictly because the name sounded intriguing. I went in hoping I wouldn’t be let down. The opening track, “Return to our Innocence,” initially had me thinking I’d picked a winner. With a high-quality pair of headphones, the crystal-clear sound makes for an enjoyable, immersive experience. It’s the kind of music you want to crank up and just get lost in…

Album Review: Miss Mary Ann and the Ragtime Wranglers – Danger Moved West – By Michael Markman for Country Music News International Magazine https://fb.watch/Fk56ssKmjG/
Listening to Danger Moved West is a strange and wonderful experience. From the first note, I found myself traveling back in time, repeatedly convinced I was listening to the 1950s. Whether it’s a long-lost Buddy Holly track or a hidden gem from the Johnny Cash era, Miss Mary Ann and the Ragtime Wranglers have mastered the art of vintage recreation…

Album Review: Sammy Kershaw – Do You Know Me? (A Tribute to George Jones) – Preshias Harris for Country Music News International Magazine https://fb.watch/Fk4cyhWb_U/
It is a commonly held belief in Nashville that nobody can sing a George Jones song quite like George Jones. However, if there is one artist who can touch that legacy, it is Sammy Kershaw…

Album Review: Joe Ely – The Definitive Collection – By A.W. Blake for Country Music News International Magazine https://fb.watch/Fk3zOewTyx/
Out of Amarillo, Texas, emerged a singer-songwriter and virtuoso guitarist who would become a primary architect of Austin’s progressive country scene in the 1970s and ’80s. For Joe Ely, the musical “spark” arrived during a life-changing childhood experience at age seven…

Album Review: Eric Lambert and Friends – Maiden Voyage – By Jeremy Frost for Country Music News International Magazine https://fb.watch/Fk2ygCfzil/
Start with a banjo, add a fiddle or two, and all you’re missing is a jug and a washboard to have one humdinger of a jug band. Toss in a front porch, a couple of rocking chairs, a dab of moonshine, and a mountain backdrop—maybe somewhere in West Virginia, Kentucky, or Tennessee—and you’ve got the best damn recipe for a good time I can imagine. (And just to be fair, let’s throw the Carolinas into that mix, too!)…

Album Review: Dr. Ross and the Jump and Jive Boys – Jukebox Boogie: The Sun Years, Plus – By Anne Blake for Country Music News International Magazine https://fb.watch/Fk1UpJZjPz/
If you find yourself jumping on the bed until you’re dizzy, you’d better call the Doctor. You likely have “The Boogie Disease,” a condition caught by anyone brave enough to play the 32 tracks found on this comprehensive collection from Dr. Ross and the Jump and Jive Boys…

Album Review: Jerry Lee Lewis – Southern Roots: The Original Sessions – By Anne Blake for Country Music News International Magazine https://fb.watch/Fk1m1s2kGL/
Southern Roots – CD1 offers an unusual, eclectic blend of music for “The Killer,” Jerry Lee Lewis. While the tracklist might seem like a departure for the rock ‘n’ roll king, Lewis manages to pull off the mix with his signature bravado…

Album Review: Donkeyhonk Company – Long Way Home – By Jeremy Frost for Country Music News International Magazine https://fb.watch/Fk0ywglMhn/
Oh, how I can feel this music this week. The opening track, “No Limb to Shake,” kicks off with a thumping bass, strumming banjo, and a foot-stomping beat that sounds as if it came straight off the Blue Ridge Mountains I’ve been venturing across. It’s the kind of music that pairs perfectly with a trek through the Sapphire Valley, up toward Whiteface Mountain, and beyond…

Single Review: Elizabeth Montgomery – “On the Sunny Side of the Street” – By Jeremy Frost for Country Music News International Magazine https://fb.watch/Fj-KkQ79y0/
The track “On the Sunny Side of the Street” opens with a beautiful piano arrangement and a soothing vocal performance—one that, frankly, I could especially use today. With three young girls between the ages of seven and ten screeching and running around our vacation condo, my ears were in desperate need of a sanctuary…

Backyard Bliss: Dust and Grace Turn a Single-Wide Into a Five-Star Resort in “Trailer Park Paradise” – By Christian Lamitschka for Country Music News International Magazine
Who needs a boarding pass when you have a garden hose and a dream? On February 20th, Pittsburgh-based project Dust and Grace is set to release “Trailer Park Paradise,” a sun-drenched anthem that proves luxury is a state of mind—even if that state involves a plastic kiddie pool and a sandbox.

Roots as Deep as the Mississippi: Copperhead Jones Redefines Devotion in “Selflessly You” – By Christian Lamitschka for Country Music News International Magazine
In the current landscape of country music, where the line between radio-ready polish and authentic grit is often blurred, Copperhead Jones has emerged as a refreshing outlier.

The Sweet Relief of “Dumb Days”: Jo Page Radiates Nostalgia in New Single “When We Knew Nothing” – By Christian Lamitschka for Country Music News International Magazine
There is a specific kind of magic found in the rearview mirror—a golden-hued memory of a time before taxes, global headlines, and the general “weight” of adulthood took hold.

Staring Down the Truth: Midnight Sky Delivers a Defiant Anthem of Resilience with “Straight At the Sun” – By Christian Lamitschka for Country Music News International Magazine
There is a specific kind of magic that happens when Midwestern grit meets the soaring melodies of heartland rock. Midnight Sky, the Americana country rock outfit led by Dayton native Tim Tye, has captured that lightning in a bottle once again.

Album Review: JL Stiles – Presents House of Murmurs – By Gaby Agrikola for Country Music News International Magazine https://fb.watch/FiD11330kn/
Presents House of Murmurs is a deeply personal project, with all songs written by San Francisco-based musician JL Stiles. The album is a heartfelt tribute dedicated to the memory of Seth Koller and Michael Morrison. It is a record that invites the listener to slow down and reflect on the fragile nature of life…

Album Review: Sara Beth – Kickin’ And Screamin’ – By Gaby Agrikola for Country Music News International Magazine https://fb.watch/FiCzL2vw6d/
Born in Dallas and raised on the sounds of the South, Sara Beth is an all-American girl making her mark on Nashville. Proudly sticking to her Texas roots, she writes songs that reflect exactly who she is today. This woman truly knows what country music is all about…

Album Review: Randy Travis – Anniversary Celebration – By Gaby Agrikola for Country Music News International Magazine https://fb.watch/FiC5N4AlPU/
Randy Travis is a name to remember—a famous country singer who is already a legend in his own lifetime. His songs are larger-than-life, and he fascinates listeners with an unmistakable voice that has a way of “twisting a woman around his finger.” He has touched so many hearts and continues to do so; he is an amazing man and a real cowboy. His music is meaningful, emotional, smooth, and unforgettable…

Album Review: Kayleigh Leith – This Woman – By Gaby Agrikola for Country Music News International Magazine https://fb.watch/FiBhTHe2m2/
Kayleigh Leith’s journey is as varied as her music. Raised in Pittsburgh, she traveled through Pennsylvania, Las Vegas, and New York before eventually settling in a small village in Holland to follow the love of her life. Living by the motto “Everything happens for a reason,” Kayleigh’s positivity shines through her work—even her best songs were born from her most challenging days…

Album Review: David Shelby – Rust Belt Cowboy – By Jeremy Frost for Country Music News International Magazine https://fb.watch/FiAMZnO6dn/
A beautiful acoustic guitar opens “Your Better Man,” and David Shelby joins in with a rich bass voice that complements it perfectly. However, lyrically speaking, it falls short right out of the gate. While I followed along with the “watching you from the stage” narrative, the song takes a sharp nosedive into movie cliché territory with the line, “You had me at hello.” Come on. That’s a direct lift from Jerry Maguire. My suggestion to Shelby is to either distance himself from whoever penned those lyrics or take a creative writing class where citing your sources is mandatory. The song moves from one cliché to another, which is a real shame given how strong the acoustic opening and his vocal performance are. It’s a rough first impression, but I held out hope it would get better…

Album Review: Lucy Malheur – Little Blue Devils – By Jeremy Frost for Country Music News International Magazine https://fb.watch/FiAazoZaKg/
Seriously, all the moping around over the last few weeks has me feeling way too much about time. Most people can only begin to grasp my mood from my previous writings. I recently went to a hearing and learned that no operation can relieve what happened to me. After my car accident and the subsequent coma, I awoke to find I’d had brain surgery. The doctors kept telling me I might need another operation without explaining exactly what was wrong; I finally had to hear the truth from my lawyer’s report. Every day, I feel like time on this Earth is slipping past…

Album Review: Dardin Smith – Love Calling – By Jeremy Frost for Country Music News International Magazine https://fb.watch/FizpmloLRs/
Given the way my week has been going, I truly could use an “Angel Flight.” Dardin Smith sets exactly the tone I need right now. This week, I learned that a large section of my frontal lobe was removed during the operation to keep me alive. Since waking from the coma and dealing with the subsequent complications, I believed I might need another surgery to remove a scar. Instead, I found out there is nothing they can do; it will only get worse. Add to that a neighbor passing away and my brother starting a divorce, and it’s been a lot to bear…

Album Review: Claire Lynch – Dear Sister – By Jeremy Frost for Country Music News International Magazine https://fb.watch/FiyQ0q2mHH/
Tonight, my “Spidey-Senses” are tingling. I know nothing about this singer, so I’ve decided to review this album using only my psychic powers. I’ve got the checklist: weird gypsy scarf, sorcerer’s cauldron, fake crystal ball, dry ice for fog, and a black book of spells. I’m missing the “Eye of Newt,” but we’ll have to make do…

Album Review: Tyrone Vaughan – Downtime – By Antoine Betbèze, for Country Music News International Magazine https://fb.watch/FiylQpvDZd/
You can guess by the name that this guy is no posh New York hipster—especially when you realize that guitar hero Stevie Ray Vaughan is Tyrone’s uncle. But don’t let the title fool you; the Downtime LP isn’t going to give you a break. Led by Tyrone’s clear-cut voice, the album is a high-energy musical journey from start to finish…

Album Review: Best of Amazing Records, Vol. 4 – By Jeremy Frost for Country Music News International Magazine https://fb.watch/FixLOS9Hnw/
I think I’ve actually changed my clothes, shaved, and taken a shower this week. Honestly, I didn’t even notice a week had passed until I realized my medication container read “Tuesday.” I’ve been putting the final touches and grammar checks on my book all week, and for once in several years, I feel like I’m finally on a timeline…

Album Review: The Looking – Songs For A Traveler – By Antoine Betbèze for Country Music News International Magazine https://fb.watch/Fitdz_iUMb/
In 2013, The Looking (the moniker for artist Todd Carter) released Songs for a Traveler, a truly mind-blowing collection. These 12 songs depict themes of sadness and endless wandering through beautifully sung narratives. Carter’s voice is undeniably one of the album’s primary strengths; he sings with a classical, “stainless” fashion—a stark contrast to the raspy delivery of someone like Bob Dylan. He places a distinct emphasis on the clarity of the lyrics, reminiscent of the great mid-century crooners…

Album Review: The New Black 7 – Hangovers and Heartbreak – By Antoine Betbèze for Country Music News International Magazine https://fb.watch/FisF8BfyVd/
The New Black 7’s newest album is a real “ass-kickin’” gem. The Southern quartet strikes a perfect balance between Country grit and Hard-Rock power—an ambivalence perfectly captured by the title, Hangovers and Heartbreak…

Live Album Review: The BossHoss – Flames of Fame Live – By Jeremy Frost for Country Music News International Magazine https://fb.watch/FiqL7anYMi/
I thought my wife getting pissed off at me today was something to quake in my boots about, but “God Loves Cowboys” makes me thank the Almighty that I’m comfortable on the couch and sure as hell not messing with these guys. The BossHoss opens this set at full-throttle, flipping the switch for “Bullpower.” A word of advice for would-be concertgoers: keep your lighters at home. I imagine robot dinosaurs launching flamethrowers so close to the crowd that half the attendees go home with singed eyebrows…

Album Review: Rhonda Vincent – Only Me (Featuring Willie Nelson) – By Jeremy Frost for Country Music News International Magazine https://fb.watch/Fir-nBsLos/
The plucking banjo strums and the mountain twang reverb through the treetops. I imagine a jug-band leaping from their rocking chairs, straw flying from their mouths toward the balcony rails as the fiddle kicks in. They tug at their overall straps and run across the dirt road to join the fray, holding onto their tweed hats so they don’t lose them amidst the hooting and hollering…

Album Review: The Coleman Brothers – Keepin’ It Real – By Antoine Betbèze for Country Music News International Magazine https://fb.watch/Fip-3XsAle/
Cowboy outfits and beards alone aren’t enough to compete with the genuine article: The Coleman Brothers from Houston, Texas. Their album Keepin’ It Real is a true gem, supported by remarkable musicianship and top-tier production. The title couldn’t be more fitting; the LP captures an atmosphere of soulful melancholy tinged with clear-eyed lucidity…

Album Review: The Drifters – Rock – By Antoine Betbèze for Country Music News International Magazine https://fb.watch/FippnE_4O1/
Rise and shine—here come The Drifters! It is famously difficult to pin down a precise lineup for this legendary R&B group. Formed in 1953, the band has seen more than 60 musicians pass through its ranks. While a version of the group still tours today with younger members, it’s safe to say they sound worlds apart from the Drifters of the early era…

Album Review: The Lacs – 190 Proof – Antoine Betbèze for Country Music News International Magazine https://fb.watch/FioUBLig_o/
Here we go: Country rap straight out of Georgia. The Lacs—comprised of “Redneck rappers” Clay “Uncle Snap” Sharpe and Brian “Rooster” King—are back. Released in 2012, 190 Proof marks the duo’s fifth studio album and their second to hit the charts under the then-recently formed Backroad Records label…

Album Review: George Ducas – 4340 – By Preshias Harris for Country Music News International Magazine https://fb.watch/FinkZLtOmh/
George Ducas is back with a new album on a new label (Loud Ranch). This marks his first full release since 1997’s Where I Stand, and his fans will certainly find it was worth the wait…
