The California Cowgirl Carrying the Torch: How Annie Bosko is Redefining Country Music’s Future with Traditional Roots

By Christian Lamitschka for Country Music News International Magazine

“Driving through the desert at sunset, chasing a feeling,” Annie Bosko explains, “is cinematic. All those colors as the day blazes out, the desire and the horizons make you feel like anything is possible. To me, no matter the emotion, music should give you that.”

For Annie Bosko, those horizons have never looked brighter. With a voice that blends the soul of the 90s country explosion with the grit of the Bakersfield sound, Bosko has emerged as a powerhouse in the modern country landscape. Her journey—from a third-generation farmer’s daughter in Thousand Oaks, California, to the hallowed stage of the Grand Ole Opry—is a testament to the power of authenticity, resilience, and what she calls “God winks.”

CD Review Susie Luchsinger – Let Go – By Christian Lamitschka for Country Music News International Magazine & Radio https://fb.watch/E_K7T53y3D/

Susie has yet again delivered the goods on this her 15th album, which is the follow up to her superb 2006 release COUNT IT ALL JOY. In the same vein as her older sister Nashville superstar Reba McEntire, she has a gift for finding songs that have a positive message, which often tell a story that conveys hope and comfort to the listener. In 2008 Susie has made a breakthrough on UK National Radio courtesy of BBC Radio 2’s Good Morning Sunday Show, receiving regular airplay and featured as a Spotlight artist…

CD Review Alison Krauss & Union Station – Paper Airplane – By Christian Lamitschka for Country Music News International Magazine & Radio https://fb.watch/E_JwpB7zJh/

After a 7-year hiatus, since 2004’s LONELY RUNS BOTH WAYS Alison Krauss & Union Station make this welcome return. The album PAPER AIRPLANE was produced by the band and recorded in Nashville with engineer Mike Shipley (Maroon 5, The Cars, Def Leppard, Joni Mitchell) to whom they turned to for a fresh polish. Alison has stated this project was a harder task to complete than previous AKUS outings. Krauss brought to the table a batch of music for the album selection process which included both new and vintage material, drawn predominately from songwriters outside the AKUS circle. After a week in the studio they realized they had some good songs but were lacking a focal point to glue the project together…

CD Review Tia McGraff – Diversity – By Christian Lamitschka for Country Music News International Magazine & Radio https://fb.watch/E_IxxTl_1H/

A diverse tapestry of eclectic styles offering different perspectives on life’s challenges.

Whether it be attending her live shows or listening to her music this Port Dover, Ontario based songwriter never fails to disappoint, and on this her 5th album the trend continues. CD Review THE ROYS – Lonesome Whistle – By Christian Lamitschka for Country Music News International Magazine & Radio https://fb.watch/E_GJmxhKU-/

Eleven tracks dripping in wholesome bluegrass goodness On this their first venture with Rural Rhythm records LONESOME WHISTLE is the third album from brother and sister duo Lee and Elaine Roy. Having seen the path that Dierks Bentley had taken with his bluegrass album Up on the Ridge, The Roys felt the urge to take a similar direction. In interview Elaine says “It feels like were coming home with our music”. On this brand new Americana/ Bluegrass outing, completed in 4 weeks, they wrote or co-wrote 10 of the 11 tracks and both as songwriters and musicians they have come full circle…

CD Review Elyse Saunders – Elyse Saunders – By Christian Lamitschka for Country Music News International Magazine & Radio https://fb.watch/E_F-_yhPho/

Recorded in 2008 when aged 19, this self titled 13-track outing marks the debut for this Peterborough, Ontario-based singer. It was produced with songs written or co-written by Cyril Rawson, who is one of the most prolific music creators in the Canadian country scene. Rawson has had over 250 songs recorded by some of the biggest names in Country music – Reba McEntire, Tanya Tucker, Gretchen Wilson, Lorrie Morgan, Anne Murray, Hal Ketchum and Lisa Brokop to name just a few. Working with Elyse he must surely have recognised her rich talent and together the combination of experience and youth is a winning combination. Rawson guided her vocal development, sound and style in order for her to be able to feel the songs. The format can best be described as country / pop with a roots edge and lyrically the tunes are relatable to a wide audience. Recorded at…

CD Review Sierra Hull – Daybreak – by Christian Lamitschka for Country Music News International Magazine & Radio https://fb.watch/E_EusfJd24/

In a year of excellent bluegrass releases, DAYBREAK the sophomore album for 19 year old prodigy Sierra Hull adds to that growing list. Hailing from a small rural community in Byrdstown, Tennessee her musical talents were quickly noticed at local contests in her early teens. With her waiflike soprano vocal, comparisons can quickly be drawn to Alison Krauss, herself a phenomenon at such a tender age. It is therefore fitting that she mentored Hull which led to a record deal with Rounder Records in 2002…

CD Review Teea Goans – The Way I Remember It – By Christian Lamitschka for Country Music News International Magazine & Radio https://fb.watch/E_D4BO8iQk/

A young lady with a modern outlook to country music but with a firm understanding of its traditional values.

On this 11 track debut Teea Goans demonstrates she is not your typical new country artist chasing modern day radio friendly hits but bucks the trend having a heart which is set on the traditional core values of country music. The album title THE WAY I REMEMBER IT, chosen by Goans, speaks volumes of the style of the record she wished to create bringing the time-honoured sounds missing in the current climate to the attention of a new generation. I have to admit that I was unfamiliar with most of the material on offer here, so with her pleasantly plaintive vocal for me she was shining a fresh beam of light through the cobwebs onto some classic songs of yesteryear whilst giving them a delicate modern twist…

For many, the name Charlie Phillips is inextricably linked to one of the most ubiquitous melodies of the 20th century. Thanks to the archival experts at Bear Family Records (BCD 16840 AR), the West Texas balladeer finally receives the comprehensive treatment he deserves…

Liverpool has long been heralded as a global epicenter of musical innovation, but while most look to the Mersey for rock and pop legends, Rachel Cain is proving that the city’s soul has a distinctive country twang. On her sprawling 14-track album, Turn Up The Radio, Cain bridges the gap between the UK and Tennessee, delivering a collection that honors the roots of traditional country while nodding to the modern sounds of the Nashville mainstream…

The Big Bang of Country Music: Echoes from the 1927–1928 Bristol Sessions – By Christian Lamitschka for Country Music News International Magazine https://fb.watch/EZwJk4n8us/

When Johnny Cash called the Bristol Sessions “the most significant moment in the history of Country Music,” he wasn’t exaggerating. What happened in a repurposed hat factory on the Tennessee-Virginia border wasn’t just a recording date; it was a sonic supernova. Bear Family Records has meticulously captured this historical milestone in BCD 16094 EK, a sprawling 5-CD box set that serves as the definitive archaeological record of American roots music…

For decades, the name Glenn Reeves was a whispered legend among rockabilly collectors and music historians. In the shadow of the towering Capitol Records building on Hollywood Boulevard sat a much smaller, scrappier operation: Sage and Sand Records. While they only managed one hit in their fifteen-year lifespan, their catalog was a vibrant, chaotic, and utterly essential melting pot of West Coast Rockabilly, Hillbilly, and Western Swing…

Bridging Worlds Through Song: Art Napoleon’s Greeland Covers Reimagines the Classics – By Christian Lamitschka for Country Music News International Magazine https://fb.watch/EZtWEePv7y/

There is a rare kind of authenticity that comes from an artist who knows exactly where they stand. In his latest release, “Greeland Covers” (Eigenvertrieb AN11), Art Napoleon proves that he is not just a performer, but a cultural bridge-builder. Eschewing the flash of “shimmering personality” for something far more substantial, Napoleon leans into the lessons of his grandparents, who ensured the young artist remained firmly on the “ground of reality”…

The Unfiltered Spirit of Sun Records: Billy Riley’s ‘The Outtakes’ is a Treasure Trove for Rockabilly Purists – By Christian Lamitschka for Country Music News International Magazine https://fb.watch/EYeiPIr2Yw/

If the history of Rock ‘n’ Roll were a book, Billy Riley would be the character who deserved his own spin-off series. Often cited as one of the most underrated heroes of the 1950s, Riley was the wild man behind some of the most frantic, high-octane recordings to ever emerge from Sam Phillips’ Sun Studio in Memphis. While he never secured a nationwide chart-topper, his influence is immortal—so much so that Bob Dylan famously championed him as a foundational figure…

For decades, the name Billy Lee Riley has been spoken with a mix of reverence and frustration by rock ’n’ roll historians. He had the looks that rivaled Elvis, the multi-instrumental prowess that surpassed Perkins, and a raw, feral confidence that could make Jerry Lee Lewis blink. Yet, despite being a cornerstone of the Sun Records sound—where his band, The Little Green Men, essentially defined the studio’s aesthetic—superstardom remained just out of reach…

Peter Rowan carries that flame with more grace than perhaps any other living artist. With his latest release, Legacy (Compass Records), Rowan and his seasoned ensemble have delivered a record that doesn’t just honor the past—it stands as a towering achievement in its own right…

For years, the origins of The Jayhawks were the stuff of record-store myth and high-priced eBay auctions. Until now, the band’s 1986 debut was a ghost in the machine—a self-titled vinyl affair released on the tiny Bunkhouse label with a meager pressing of only 2,000 copies. For the vast majority of the band’s global fanbase, these recordings were legendary whispers rather than tangible sounds…
