The opening track “Renegade Runaway” is
about a woman who breaks hearts all the time, a lady who leaves pieces wherever
she goes. The song merges the
fundamentals of rock and country. Underwood
co-wrote it with Hillary Lindsey and Chris DeStefano. The pure country “Church Bells” features the
Cinderella story, in which a poor, beautiful maiden marries a rich man. The song started out as a fairy tale romance
and ended up with the lady finding herself married to an abusive man. It details thoughts and feelings at a crucial
time in life. There’s as much as “Jesus Take the Wheel” in this one as
much as the lines that say, “Fold your
hands and close your eyes. Yeah, it’s
all gonna be alright and just listen to the church bells ringing, ringing. Yeah, they’re ringing” carries a powerful
message. When everything is out of
control, just leave your burdens at the feet of Jesus and He’ll make a way for
you where there seems to be no way. There
is something about the pitch of “Heartbeat” that never fails to tweak my
heartstrings. It has a romantic,
rhythmic vibe. The lyrics, the enchanted
sound of the guitar and the kick of the drums somehow tune my heart to sing,
“Tonight I want to drive so far
we’ll only find static on the radio… and we can’t see those city lights…and I
love the way you look in firefly glow… Saying everything without making a sound…a
cricket choir in the background, underneath a harvest moon… Standing on your
shoes in my bare feet… Dancing to the rhythm of your heartbeat.“ It’s a great song. “What I Never Knew I Always Wanted” is deeply
personal and is my favorite on the album.
It’s the celebration of love, courtship, marriage and motherhood.
