I have loved old-time fiddle music since I was just a small
tot listening to it on Saturday nights out behind an old dance hall in
Norfolk, Nebraska, where my parents went to dance the night away.  Kids
were a nuisance at a dance hall, and after mom had carefully tucked my
younger brother Martin into bed on the back seat of the car, and me in
the front seat, off she went to dance with dad.  I couldn’t sleep a
wink, just as soon as that old-time country dance music started up, I
was right outside the window where the band was playing, listening to
the incredibly gifted fiddler playing song after song.  Avis Groseclose
is one of those fabulous fiddlers that still makes the old songs come
alive.  She lives in Apache Junction, Arizona, and was brought to my
attention by other Arizona winterers, Jerry & Maggie Hughes.  To
anyone who remembers the old dance songs, every one that Avis has on
this CD will be recognizable. What’s so neat about the entire
presentation is Floyd Tidd on a soft guitar backing with light bass.
Just right for easy listening.  For anyone that would like to experience
what that old-time fiddle music really sounded like, you will find it
on this CD, incredibly well done.  Avis must have a tremendous ear, she
never misses a note.  She’s going into ‘America’s Old Time Fiddler’s
Hall of Fame’ this year in LeMars, Iowa, Aug 25-31, at the big old-time
music festival there.  I’m so pleased to be able to listen to something
that takes me back to my youth so easily, and so well played, it tends
to make me youthful, just listening.  You’ll get to hear her at LeMars,
she intends bringing an entire 8-piece band with her.  Can you imagine
how ‘Faded Love’ is going to sound on the dance floor there?  Welcome to
the Hall of Fame Avis, and welcome to LeMars for the big old-time
dance.  Avis is at eneesi@gmail.com  I kind of liked “Crooked Stovepipe” mostly because I have never heard it before, and it’s a great up-tempo dance tune.
