During his relatively brief association with Sun
Records
, Carl Perkins had eight singles and one LP
released though, over the years, as music historians have dug into the label’s
archives, more and more material have been discovered and released. Now
Bear Family have come up with the ultimate collectors’
package, gathering together the previously unissued material with some
never-issued home recordings from that era. Comprising alternative versions,
false starts, fragments of recordings and occasional snatches of studio
conversation, this five cd set adds up to 152 tracks, and 45 separate songs,
with a running time just a few seconds under six
hours.
The recording details are, more often than not, sparse but the songs laid
down during Perkins association with Sun (October 1954 – December 1957) are Honky Tonk Babe/Gal, Turn Around, Movie
Magg, You Can’t Make Love to Somebody, Gone Gone Gone, Let The Jukebox Keep On
Playing, What You Doin’ When You’re Cryin’, Perkins Wiggle, Tennessee, Sure To
Fall, Blue Suede Shoes, Honey Don’t, Boppin’ The Blues, All Mama’s Children,
Only You, Everybody’s Trying To Be My Baby, Dixie Fried, I’m Sorry I’m Not
Sorry, Caldonia, Sweethearts Or Strangers, Be Honest with Me, Put Your Cat
Clothes On, Matchbox, Her Love Rubbed Off, Your True Love, That Don’t Move Me,
You Can Dop No Wrong, Forever Yoyurs, That’s Right, I Care, Y.O.U., Lend Me Your
Comb, Glad All Over, Look At That Moon, Pink Peddle Pushers, The Way That You’re
Living, Keeper Of The Key, Listen To The Mockingbird, The Old Spinning Wheel,
Try My Heart Out, Poor People Of Paris, Roll Over Beethoven, Take Back My Love,
Silver Bell, Somebody Tell Me, Lonely Street
and Drink Up And Go Home. The majority of
these titles were made in the Sun Studios though some are home demos or club
recordings.
Besides providing the opportunity to hear Perkins’ vocals of alternative
takes on some of his best known titles – Blue Suede Shoes, Honey Don’t,
Dixie Fried and Your True Love obviously – his
recordings occasionally reflected his country roots with such as Keeper Of The Key, Lonely Street and Drink Up And Go Home while such obvious
un-Perkins type material as Listen To The
Mockinbird
and Poor People Of
Paris
gives way , albeit briefly, to his superlative guitar
work, arguably the best picker to have ever stepped into the Sun studios.
First and foremost a set for the Perkins’ completists (who’ll delight in
checking out, among other tracks, the merits of such as Your True Love,
Put Your Cat Clothes On and Everybody’s Trying To Be My
Baby
, meriting 7, 18 and 9 versions respectively), this labour-of-love
collection is accompanied by a 134 page booklet in writers Hank
Davis
and Scott Parker provide detailed background
into each of the songs and their recordings. The booklet also contains
conversations with W. S. Holland and Stan
Perkins
, many hitherto unpublished photographs and a discography.
