Brandon Wisham Good Grief

The Weight of Love: Brandon Wisham Finds a Way Through the Dark in “Good Grief”

By Christian Lamitschka for Country Music News International Magazine

Rising country star Brandon Wisham has never been one to shy away from the jagged edges of the human experience. But with his latest single, “Good Grief,” the 23-year-old singer-songwriter dives into his most vulnerable territory yet. It is a slow-burning power ballad that doesn’t just talk about loss—it breathes it.

A Masterclass in Catharsis

Produced by Matt Geroux (known for his work with Josh Ross and Just Jayne), “Good Grief” is a sonic landscape of “love with nowhere to go.” The track is built on a foundation of sorrowful guitar tones and bittersweet piano melodies that sway with a gentle, funeral-march rhythm.

Wisham’s vocal performance is the North Star of the track. He navigates the verses with an aching restraint, only to let his voice catch and soar during a hard-hitting chorus that feels like a physical release of pressure.

“I feel you knockin’ on my chest / Subtle as a hurricane / Chokin’ out my breath / Runnin’ through my veins.”

The lyrics, co-written with hitmakers Josh Jenkins, Josh Dorr, and Dylan Guthro, personify grief as an uninvited guest. The wordplay in the title—flipping the casual idiom “good grief” into a literal, painful acquaintance—is a stroke of poetic brilliance.

From Savannah to the Spotlight

Wisham’s journey to this moment is as authentic as his lyrics. Originally from Savannah, Georgia, and raised in Williamston, South Carolina, he was the youngest of seven children. He was a veteran of the bar circuit by age 15, but it was a family tragedy that truly forged his path. At 19, following the loss of his father to Covid, he wrote his first song, “Pain Won’t Last.”

That raw honesty caught the ears of the industry’s heavy hitters. Since then, Wisham has:

  • Signed a global publishing deal with Warner Chappell Music.

  • Been named a “Highway Find” by SiriusXM The Highway.

  • Contributed his songwriting to Bailey Zimmerman’s platinum-certified Religiously. The Album.

A Busy Road Ahead

“Good Grief” arrives just as Wisham’s career is reaching terminal velocity. He isn’t just a studio artist; he is a commanding live performer who has already shared stages with Tyler Hubbard and Chase Matthew.

Fans can catch him on the following high-profile dates:

  • Next Month: Touring with Priscilla Block.

  • Late March: Joining Nate Smith for a massive North American tour.

  • June 17–18: A bucket-list two-night stand at Nashville’s legendary Ryman Auditorium.

  • April 26: His highly anticipated debut at Stagecoach.

The Verdict

In a genre that sometimes leans too heavily on “trucks and beer” tropes, Brandon Wisham is a breath of fresh, albeit tear-filled, air. “Good Grief” is a testament to the fact that the deepest pain often stems from the deepest love. It is a song for anyone who has ever looked at an empty chair and felt the “hurricane” in their chest.
