Bigg Vinny: From Music Row Scion to “Walmart Drip” King and Beyond
By Christian Lamitschka for Country Music News International Magazine
Middle Tennessee native Vencent Hickerson, known to the world as Bigg Vinny, isn’t just another voice in country music; he’s a testament to resilience, reinvention, and the enduring power of a good story. His roots in Nashville run deep, a second-generation musician who grew up watching his father, a phenomenal guitarist, grace stages with legends like Loretta Lynn and the Steve Miller Band. This rich heritage fueled Vinny’s ambition, setting the stage for his own remarkable journey.
After years honing his craft on every possible Nashville stage, Vinny secured a publishing deal, a stepping stone to the next pivotal moment in his career: signing with a major record label. He became one half of the duo The Trailer Choir, quickly earning his unforgettable moniker “Bigg Vinny” due to his then-astounding weight of 426 lbs. The nickname stuck, but the weight certainly did not.
A Transformation That Echoes Beyond the Stage
A near-fatal health scare due to his obesity led Vinny to Season 12 of NBC’s “The Biggest Loser.” What followed was a dramatic and inspiring transformation, as the once-obese man shed an incredible amount of weight, emerging as a svelte 242 lbs. Today, Vinny’s powerful voice resonates far beyond music. He’s become a sought-after motivational speaker and a passionate advocate for health and fitness, his very existence a living testament to the sheer power of determination.
Now, Vinny is poised to take 2025 by storm with his highly anticipated single, “Walmart Drip.” He describes the track as “what would happen if Toby Keith took Bruno Mars and Snoop Dogg on a Walmart shopping spree!” This infectious new song sprang from a relatable experience: a shopping trip with his wife and kids that spiraled from “just one thing” into a $500 excursion. It was during this adventure that Vinny spotted a glorious swimsuit set, complete with a beach view and palm trees. Upon trying it on at home, he exclaimed to his wife, “dang girl look at all this DRIP!” Her immediate response? “Go inside and write the song right then!”
Vinny, ever the collaborator, brought in his songwriting mentor Ken Harrell and his wife, Jenny Goforth Hickerson, to ensure every hilarious and relatable aspect of the Walmart experience was captured. The result, he believes, is a hit. The accompanying music video is a star-studded affair, featuring friends like Chris Kirkpatrick (NSYNC), Miles Burris (Disney’s Safety, former Raiders linebacker), Tayler Holder (artist and influencer), Marc ‘Butter’ Fortney (his former duo partner), and the legendary Moon Trull. Vinny also proudly includes his mentor Ken Harrell, his wife and kids, and Miles’ wife and kids in the video, making it a true family affair.
A Heart for Music and a Mission for Good
Beyond his chart-topping aspirations and personal journey, Vinny’s impact extends into philanthropy and creative endeavors. He founded Music with a Mission, a non-profit dedicated to raising awareness about the vital role music programs play in schools. His prolific songwriting continues, with melodies penned for renowned artists such as Canaan Smith, Montgomery Gentry, and Hinder.
In a heartwarming collaboration with his bandmate Marc “Butter” Fortney, Vinny also co-wrote a poignant song that evolved into a children’s book titled “The Bully.” This project showcases his commitment to spreading messages of compassion and kindness to the youngest of readers.
Bigg Vinny’s story is a compelling blend of musical heritage, personal triumph, and a genuine desire to make a positive difference. With “Walmart Drip” poised to become a summer anthem, 2025 looks set to be another landmark year for this multifaceted artist. His journey reminds us that transformation is possible, and that true drip comes from within.
